His problem is he doesnt know the difference between a modem and a router and the problem was with his ISP not necessarily Vonage.

hmmm high ping times and lag are who's problem?

That yard. What can I say. looks like a entry in the Jeff Foxworthy RedNeck Yard the week.

Great post. Sure this guy didnt post here that he hates Vonage and it doesnt work?

You're missing his point. He bought a service in good faith. Tried to use it and had problems. Spend several times on the phone -- mostly on hold -- with customer service and did not resolve his problems. When he finally figured out that this wasn't going to work for him, he wanted to cancel and be done...but he's still out $180.

Most users don't want the hassel of chasing down their ISP and convincing technicians they have a problem with latency and packet loss. Then when he did get it working sort of OK, he had other programs he ran on his computer that no longer ran -- for what ever reason.

If Vonage wants to be a viable alternative to traditional hone service, then it has to be transparent -- plug it in and forget about it. Vonage is not like that yet -- maybe Voip will never get there.

When most people switch to Vonage, they just want to plug it in and save money. Only those willing to put up with less than perfect service for a discounted monthly fee will do it. I do it because I save money and am willing to give up on telephone reliability. With each member of my family having cell phones, the phone to the house is no longer an absolute necessity -- it's just a convenience.

There are days when I'd like to take my Motorola VT2442 Router/VoIP Gateway and do what this guy did to his LinkSys WRTP54G. This was his way of venting his frustration, but it should also be a warning to people who want to just save money on their phone service. It is not always a simple plug and play alternative and given Vonages poor customer service it can be an extremely frustrating endeavor. Caveat emptor!

ref last past - disclaimer: This is not to throw stones or throw you under the bus and I most certainly did get his point. He put his frustrations to a sort-of positive use, and the cancellation fee is a suprise and has been mentioned here many many times and he should probably have asked questions on this forum first. BUT

Given what was presented most of his problems were his, as in his network, his ISP, his peripheral hook ups on his network, perhaps his routers, his wiring etc. We will never know the results of his testmyvoip nor what his upload/download speed was advertised at and/or actually was and if he had cable, dsl or satelite nor what programs he was running on his PC's nor how his network was setup. We will also never know what adaptor he had.

In my opinion most users have little or no problem with the initial setup IF their home network is simple and they follow the instructions or use common sense. I am sure many will echo this but I had zero problems with the setup and was up and running in minutes after package arrived. Of course I have had problems since but most can be attributed to my ISP provider and of course Vonage does have an occasional problem.

What this joker (on the video) did was mirror what most anti-vonage posters say when they post on this forum, blame everything on Vonage when it may very well (not guaranteed obviously) that it is the fault of something on the other side of the Vonage adaptor or their ISP. I have wanted to make this post since I joined this group and this scenerio fits perfect. I believe that crappy upload speed is the main problem for most anti-vonage posters with network/home router problems being second and software problems like bittorrent being third. I run a complicated network with no problems.

Of course I could be wrong and the video was hilarious either way. Maybe he did have a problem, as some people do, that required upper level tech help and we all know how Vonage CS is.

If he had only posted info on this forum the amateur and professional techs who post here could have helped him. We will never know.

I've used Vonage for about 8 months now with little difficulty, and I have a complex home LAN, and I understand that I've basically taken on the responsibility of being the Telco in using this service. Many, many people are not able to fix the common issues that may arise when using Voip. Not their fault, not Vonage's fault, just how it is.

What is Vonage's fault, and where all of us satisfied users need to have a clear voice, is that Vonage has world class LOUSY customer service from every aspect - tech support, billing, cancellation.

That is their fault, and their fault alone. A company looking to grow long term takes care of all their customers. They don't let people stay on hold for an hour, the don't charge people to cancel a service they can't get to work - no matter who's fault it is, and they make it easy to cancel when that's what the customer wants.

Just my two cents.

I spent the time to watch this video and I must have missed the funny part. He struck me as yet another person who did not do his homework and got burned.

Should Vonage's terms be more forgiving? Yes.

Should he understand the smallest portion of what he's buying? Yes.

Is the WRTP54G a piece of junk that should be pulled from the market? Absolutely.

I have three lines of Vonage service and very reliable BellSouth DSL service. The problems folks have with delay and latency are so completely alien to any experience I have ever had. My business ATA and softphone connect to a variety of networks from client sites, hotels, in-laws and relatives cable connections. It just works.

Vonage isn't re-inventing the wheel with their phone service, they're deploying publicly accessible SIP connections. It just isn't that hard.

I can see where he is coming from. I too sometimes have the same issue when trying to get a dial tone, it takes 6 to 10 seconds. And no this is not an ISP error. I am a Computer Systems Admin, I know what I am doing. I pull 4.0 both ways with testmyvoip, and I have a 3 meg up/ 3 meg down DSL line from verizon.

Personally I have no problem with Vonage because I just forward all my calls to my cell phone. Basically I am using it to have a local area code phone number for my business. Even when I do have to wait 10 seconds for a dial tone Vonage still gives me crystal clear calls. Overall I am happy.

Just my two cents.

Please correct me, but the dial tone is generate from the ATA and not from Vonage. The dial tone shows the ATA has connected to the server.

Would a slow dial tone be a Vonage or ISP question?

Thanks for any input.

Mr Computer Systems Admin, I am glad you know what you are doing, but you cannot, "pull 4.0 both ways with testmyvoip". One's a push, the others a pull. And how can you definitively say that the ISP is not to blame for the long dial-tone? Give us details!
