I have one Vonage phone line that is shared by a splitter with my all-in-one HP PSC 950. I can send faxes with no problems. I can only receive a fax by disabling my Vonage voice mail. If I leave the voice mail enabled, the fax goes directly into my voice mail. Is there anyway I can keep the voice mail enabled and still be able to receive faxes?

Not one that you'll really love. What most of us do in this situation is just enable the fax receive manually when we know one is coming in. You can also adjust timing dela on Voicemail so that the fax machine picks up before Voicemail does, but then it will do so every time and Voicemail is essentially disabled.

Unfortunately, we're pretty well stuck with this unless we have a dedicated fax line. A solution would be a fax machine that had a built in answering machine and the ability to discriminate between voice and fax calls, but I'm not aware of any such.

Thanks for your reply Steve. I've already tried your suggestion of setting the HP all-in-one to answer before the voice mail, but as you stated, I'm essentially disabling the voicemail. Maybe in the near future, Vonage will have a "distinct" ring tone so that incoming faxes can be picked automatically with the voicemail enabled.

Maybe, but to provide a distinct tone, Vonage would have to know that the incoming call was a fax, and I don't know how they would determine that. If you had a virtual number with a distinct tone, that would work, but it would be easier in that case to just get a separate fax line.

Steve48,

I don't think it would be that difficult. Many fax machines can be set to answer the distinctive ring only.

Right, but I was thinking about the cost as well. I think a virtual number costs $5 a month and a dedicated fax line costs $10. For that difference, I think I would go with the dedicated line.
