PostPosted: Fri May 26, 2006 3:21 am    Post subject: Disconnecting external phone company wire at new home Reply with quote Back to top

I just moved to a new home and got Vonage set. Now that Vonage works in one of the phones I have, I thought its time to read the setup guide to set my own private Vonage telephone circuit at home. Meanwhile I figured out the location of the telephone panel at my home.

Here's where the problem started. The phone lines control panel at my home (a new home built by Centex Homes in Bothell, WA with Cat5 wiring done) doesn't resemble any of the panels shown in the setup guide. It doesn't have any plugs.

It has 2 sides. One side takes the input and takes 4 pairs of wires (blue-white, orange-white, green-white and brown-white) into that many number of slots in a single stretch of white base. The other side has 7 such white bases, each of them taking 4 pairs of xxx-white wires.

Here's how it looks like.
Front/Input side (source feed from telephone company):

Back side/Output to jacks at home:

Here's what I did:
I disconnected the first pair of wires in the input side / front. It was hard to remove the blue and white pair as it was tightly fixed into the white base. Then I tried to input the Vonage line into one of the home jacks and tried my phone from another home jack. Oops! silence...silence...silence!

My questions here:
* What am i missing?
* Should I just disconnect all the pairs in the input side of the phone control panel?
* Is there a simpler way to disconnect the input feed in such a device?
* Is this type of panel uncommon? If not, if this is the common ones oflate in new homes, why couldn't I find anything like this in Vonage forums?

Could anyone pleaseeeeeeeee help me disconnect the external line at my home? If you do, I will keep thanking you everytime I get a Vonage call. Smile

What you have here is a structured wiring cabinet and not a NID. That is why you are not finding similar pictures on the forum.

I prefer to do my changes in the structured wiring cabinet rather than the NID. It gives me more control and allows me to mix Vonage and POTS (when I was in the LNP stage). However, not everyone has a structured wiring cabinet and doing the changes here might make it more difficult for someone else to reconnect things later.

What you did should have worked. From here you would need to diagnose this as a wiring problem. It's possible that something in your drops is wired incorrectly. You say this was a new home, did you ever have PSTN service?

Unfortunately this is not the most user friendly panel. You might want to consider punching a test jack into the eigth position on the front of the panel to make things a little easier.

If you are not going to use any PSTN connections I would disconnect all of the inputs. This will provide some small amount of isolation from power surges. You may want to disconnect at the NID as well for this same reason.

Thanks a lot, scerruti. I got it working!!!

Since you told I did the right thing and I should have got the private circuit set up by now, I went ahead to recheck my connections. I noticed that in the jacks board in each room of my house, there were 2 phone jack outlets. I used the other jack outlet than the one I used before. The earlier one was at top and was colorless. The new one was at bottom and was wrapped by blue color. Once I started using the blue colored jack output, things worked fine. I have phones connected to jack outlets in different rooms of my home.
