6a. was modem >> RT31P2 >> PC & xbox360
6b. now modem >> netgear RP614 >> RT31P2, PC & xbox360
7. random reboots, dropped calls, choppy audio, voice mail fails to answer
8. testyourvoip to Boston = 4.4

The RT31P2 can no longer be used as a router because it seems to overheat and reboot itself. It wouldn't be so bad if it would completely reboot, but it usually gets stuck and needs to be unplugged and replugged to get it working. Sticking fans on the adapter really isn't an option as I have young children. Just using it as a phone adapter allows it to operate much cooler to the touch. There's nothing around the adapter or stacked on it. After many emails back and forth with Vonage tech support, this was their final suggestion:

"In response to your email, the device may be getting hot because of the surge protector. Try connecting it directly to the wall. It is possible that the device is going bad and that may be why it keeps rebooting itself. Unfortunately the device is no longer under warranty at this point. If you prefer you can always pick one up locally at a retail store like Best Buy or circuit City. I do hope that I have answered your questions. Do not hesitate to contact us if you need further assistance."

Do I need to buy another adapter or should Vonage send me one? If I were to cancel my service and return their adapter, then there is not a cancellation fee, correct? That tells me the adater is still their property. Ant thoughts?

I don't think so, i suspect that there is a cancellation fees of $39 ........so plz double check in Vonage website before u go ahead & cancel ........
also my other suggestion is try with this type of set-up..

cable modem--->rt31p2-->netgear rtr u may find some improvement

Not so. The $39 can-fee is waived if I return their phone adapter.

As far as the setup goes, I used to have it setup cable modem >>RT31P2 until recently. Unfortunately, the RT31P2 gets very hot when used as a router and will reboot itself frequently.

I've had Vonage for a year and it has worked pretty well until recently. The question is: Should I have to buy another phone adapter or should Vonage send me one? If I buy another adapter they will probably charge another activation fee. I've played the on-hold-forever-game and I really don't want to anymore. I guess the thing that annoys me the most is I will have to pay more money to replace THEIR device. Thoughts?

I can't swear to it since it has not happened to me, but I don't think that getting a new device to replace a broken one would constitute an activation cost. It is not clear cut and I am not a lawyer, but the way the TOS goes it talkes about activation regarding your phone line(s) and since this is not a new line or a line being cancelled, I don't think it applies.

This of course does not address needing to purchase another device.

Hi,

I think its better to get the device from retail, since devices from retail are within 1 year warranty, And in case if something goes wrong you can get a replacement from Vonage within a year. And also you can save shipping cost in case if Vonage sends you an adapter. But you wont be getting any rebates for the device since Vonage offers only one rebate/acct. There wont be any activation fee. The device too could be activated immediately by calling customer care at early mornin hours like 4 am EST
