Got the unit running after returning the 1st modem. Tech support was good after I finally got a young lady who spoke english well. Have been using the system for a few days and made and received many calls. I've heard the belly-aching of many, but also the success stories. You need to have a little computer savvy. It works and it will save me a cool $600-$800 this year over Bell South.

I am equally pleased with the value. There are some warts -- Caller ID, no Collect Calling, DTMF Talk off, etc. But all in all not bad.

I guess if I run into a problem that knocks my service out and I have to end up sitting on hold for hours, I may change my tune, but so far (knock on wood) it seems like a good deal.

I only had the vonage service for a short time but I'm pleased with it so far. Why would anyone want or need "collect call" service. That's so 1970's. Unless you receive these collect calls from someone "locked up."

That is exactly why people need it. You might also need it if, on the outside chance your son or daughter has trouble some evening while out having fun. Their belongings, like their cell phone, are gone, they have no way of contacting you. Get to a pay phone -- yes there are few and they are far between -- and call home...collect.

I've thought about this. This is one reason why I would like to be able to receive collect calls. Given the age of my kids -- they all have cell phones, are in high school and middle school -- this is a concern to me. I drop them off at a HS dance, they get into some sort of trouble, loose their cell phone, or it dies, or it is stolen -- what do they do? There are several options, hopefully they are with someone they can borrow a cell phone, but if not I would hate to have taken away one of their options for calling home.

Maybe my answer is to shell out the $5 per month for a toll free number...because collect calls are not an option with Vonage. Now my $25 bill becomes $30 (or $15 becomes $20).

Don't discount the need for a feature just because you don't see an immediate need -- or in your case a need you feel is not worth while.

That $5.00 A month Toll free number is the hi-light of Vonage for me! It took a while for it to spread out to the friends I have living across the country but I now receive newsy calls from a lot of folk I like to hear from. Oddly, I had to put out the word that my company was providing it to get most folk to use it. I expect that in a few years long distance will become a thing of the past, but for now the 866 number is what keeps me with Vonage.

Snipe, do you know if the toll free 866 number works in Canada as well as the states. I live in the states, some of my family live in Canada. If I got an 866 number, could the family in Canada use it?

I believe so but am not absolutely sure. Perhaps someone will comment here.

That's a hoot. You figure people wouldn't call if they knew you were shelling out the money for the toll free number, but heck, if your company is paying for it, I'll call all the time. That's probably what I'd have to do...especially with my family.

I find that most people who call long distance do so using their cell phones because it is not a toll call for them. I agree, long distance charges will soon be a thing of the past -- then I wonder if VoIP will loose more of its appeal...

If I were a phone company, I'd push to provide both wireless and land based service. Tie them together so home calls get forwarded to wireless device (or use the simuring technique) so people have one communications provider. A minute is a minute -- wired or wireless. I think the telco's are prohibited from joining wireless and wired service for legal reasons -- but I could be wrong...
