we just got Vonage for my moms home business and she needs to start using it now. the only problem is that we are having our phone number transferred to Vonage which means i cant disconnect myself from the outside phone line.
so what can i do? i need Vonage to work throughout the house... is there a way that i could just hook up one phone directly to where the phone line comes into the house? which is in my basement. |

Yes, you can disconnect the land line and hook just one phone to it- a cordless, perhaps- and use the house wiring for your Vonage phone. This may be hard or easy, depending on the wiring you have and the means of making the disconnect. |

The reason they recommend you wait is so that you can still receive calls on your home phone number, also there are some cases where the LPN fails so your temp number becomes your primary Vonage line... if it fails then you will need service to find out why.
If you go to http://tinyurl.com/or379 it will take you step by step of disconnecting the line coming into your home so you can connect your device into your home wiring. |

but say there is a problem in the transfer, will my local telephone company call me or will Vonage?
i will probable give a call to my telepone company to see how thing are going tho |

oops try http://tinyurl.com/6knmo
no I'm saying that if for some reason the current privider can not transfer the number over then the LNP will fail and Vonage will contact you. in that case you would need to contact your provider and cancel the service yourself. |

First, you don't have to wait for the transfer to be completed. As you suggested, you can connect the land line to one phone and use Vonage in the rest of the house.
What I meant by "disconnect the land line" is disconnect it from the house wiring and connect it to that one phone that you were talking about. That way you can connect Vonage to the house wiring and use it throughout the house. You can't have both Vonage and the landline hooked to the house wiring at the same time (this is very important!!), at least not on the same wire pair.
How the disconnect is done depends on your wiring. In recently built houses it's usually as simple as pulling a plug. In older homes, you generally have to find a junction box and determine which wires in it come from outside and which run to jacks in the house. You disconnect the former from the latter. Much of this is discussed in the sticky post at the top of this forum. |

thx so much. and just to clarify for sure, i can disconnect myself from the outside line while the transfer is going on?
if so then i have no need to connect 1 phone in a special way, ill just go completely to Vonage. and ive read that sticky, i have an older house

i have "something" similar to this in my basement, except there are wires coming from outside and pluggin into this, im guessing that i can just disconnect those wires and if i have no dialtone im fine. |

well i just disconnected that wire and the phones in the house are dead. but when i connect my Vonage box to the phone jack, the phones still dont work. but if i plug a phone directly into Vonage it works. |
