PostPosted: Wed May 24, 2006 10:58 am    Post subject: Possible Voange User Needs Setup Help Reply with quote Back to top

Hi All.

So my question is this.

First the setup.

Adelphia is the ISP
Terayon TJ 715 is the cable Modem.
Belkin 4 port wired router.
1 Computer hard wired to the router.
1 Belkin Wirless Access point plugged into the router.
1 WD-Netcenter Mass Storage Device plugged into router.
1 4 port switch plugged into the router.
1 Laptop plugged into the switch "or can be wireless"
1 Computer wireless connecting to the Access point.

The question is this:

I want to purchase and use Vonage service. How should I connect it to my network. I only need one phone line for a dedicated fax line with capability of expanding to a voice line in the future.

Should the Vonage adapter be connected before the router or should it be connected to the router? Or can it be connected to the switch. ?

Thanks in advance.

Marc,

The Vonage phone adapter works like any simple LAN device. Just plug it into any port on your LAN: router, switch or hub. As long as DHCP is working properly on your LAN, ususally in the router, Vonage should start working. Plug your fax into the phone port on the adapter and you'll be faxin'.

I have DHCP enabled in the router now.

Would I have to enable port forwarding in order for the phone adepter to work.

The reason I ask is, i have ben reading to some extent of the problem people are having with the service. I'm just looking for the easiest setup possible without any problems.

Thanks.

Marc,

Most installations do not require port forwarding. People only post questions here when something goes wrong. The Vonage adapter is designed to work through home routers with no configuration required.

I did have to make some changes one time when setting up a router with a "Stateful Packet Inspection" firewall. I could initiate calls, but the audio and faxes would not go through. Vonage customer support fixed me up quickly.

the best suggestion that i want you to do is to put the Vonage device right after the internet modem because most of the time hubs, switch, or other routers (place between the modem and the Vonage device) interrupt the signals coming from the modem and might send your Vonage device useless (will not work accurately).

then, connect the other devices after the Vonage device.

hope this could help...
have a great day!

Connect the Vonage Router to the Router right behind the cable modem, and move something else to the switch. You do NOT want that Vonage device doing anything but phone ops, and definately not actively routing. Give the Vonage device a straight shot out via the other router, and you will be safe. Don't connect it to the swicth, because one more device adds one more layer of possible issues. And for gods sake, don't use the Vonage device as a router.

Ok so I got the PAP2. Registered online and set it up with no problems. The one thing I did not do was to port my landline # to Vonage. I would have liked to place it befor the router but on the PAP2 there is only 1 Lan connector so I was forced to use a port on the router it's self. Everything seems to be working great. I did have to move the mass storage device to the switch that has caused some slown down but nothing I can't live without.

Thanks everyone who posted with some good advice. It's nice to get quality feedback on a newbie question.
