Anyone know if Vonage works well in Australia. My wife and I are moving down there in October for a year and would like to bring it with us. |

I can't imagine why it wouldn't. As long as you have a broadband Internet connection it should work fine. Latency MAY be an issue, though, but it'd most definitely be worth a try-- it would make calling your friends back here a lot less expensive. |

Is there a way to have someone test latency? The best DSL connection you can get in Australia is 1.5 mbit/256k and cable is very sporadic and hard to get.
If I know a few people that have either good cable or DSL connections, is there any way to have the test thier connection for latency? That might help to see what it's like from Australia. |

If you know someone in Australia, have them run the tests here from their computer: http://www.testyourvoip.com/ They should give a pretty good indication on how it would work. |

Works fine here in Melbourne on a 512/128 DSL connection behind a Netgear MR314 router but have only had it for a day. The biggest problem I had was that I plugged in the phone in Line 2 by mistake. |

an52, mind sharing the ISP you are using? Know of any Telstra issues with using Voip?
I'm very happy to hear that someone in Australia is using Vonage, it will make a very big difference for us next year when we come down. Thanks. |

Hi TJ, I'm using Netspace.net.au but many if not most ADSL providers are selling what is a Telstra service since the latter owns the copper. The ADSL problems usually relate to the authentication server at the ISP, e.g. if you never hang up, you don't notice if the ISP's auth server is down. At other times the problem is in the local DSLAM and would affect all users regardless of ISP. Check out whirlpool.net.au forums for user opinions. |

An update.
Don't transfer files during a phone call. My colleague was telling me about this problem and he sent me a 1 MB file while I sent myself a 10 MB attachment at the same time. While I was able to hear him most of the time, my responses to him were delayed by over 15 seconds and the file download was taking place at the rate of some bytes per second - slower than I remember of the 300 baud days... Once I killed my file upload process, things were more usable, so the moral is get something faster than 512/128 DSL, e.g. SHDSL or cable if you need to move big files while you talk. |

A decent one that I think works well is pingplotter.com. They have a freeware version that you can download.
Download the freeware version and pick a pingable website and let the test run for a bunch of hours(to get a good picture of latency).
Try to run the test in peak times(with cable) so that you get an idea when making calls during these peak hours you'll know that maybe there will be some audio issues.
Just an FYI. |
