direct-tivo ppp serial connection

i 've seen success stories about doing the serial ppp connection at tivohelp.com

so i'm hopeing some-one can help me work thru this one

i made my cable twice one with the pins 2 and 3 normal and one with them reversed so i would not need a null modem (tested with vom for no shorts and correct wiring)... my laptop only has usb so i got a usb to serial cable.. i installed the software and xp says its working and no conflicts

i followed the instructions a tivohelp and got all the way thru it but its not working...

tivo says phone busy when i make a test call

my connection icon should pop up on windows when guest connects but it does not.

i have an rs232 tester led box but i am seeing green leds on the cts rts ect but td stays red and rd does not light up...

so has something happened on the series 2 tivos last software upgrade to make the serial ppp connection un-usable now?

idid the 1st line of troubleshooting deleteing the connections and firing up hyperterminal ... but it does not scroll any data across the terminal when i try a test call.

update:

i confirmed that my cables are correct...

i found on the web how to make a loopback test....take a db 9 connector and solder pins 2 and 3 together

so when you fire up hyperterminal it echos back your text when it is plugged in and no echo with it removed... i put my rs232 tester between it and saw the td light only without the loopback inserted and the rd + td were on with the loopback connector in the cable.

i checked my direct-tivo and the rd data light was on but when i inserted the loopback plug td came on too... so i know the cables are correct and should mate up since the pc had td and tivo had rd lights on. so now it is off to the software side of xp to find the problem
