I opened up the box and unplugged the one phone jack plugged in. I tested a phone in the house and it was still getting a dial tone. I plugged a phone directly into the jack in the NIB and didn't get a dial tone.
There's a black wire coming from the street into the box. The wire splits inside the box and each end goes to a different screw. Also attached to each screw is one red wire, one green, and one brown.
The red and green wires from each screw go to the phone jack that i disconnected. The brown wires goes to a circuit board (or something).
Should I unplug the wires coming from the street? Then what would I do with the red, green, and brown wires?
Please help. Moto gets here tomorrow. |

Good thing you checked!
Yes, disconnect all the wires in there, that box is MESSED UP. If there's only one wire going to your house you can disconnect that one, but most assuradly the phone co's side is wired back asswards.
If there's more than one wire coming from your house side, you'll want to splice them to each other ONLY (not to anything that comes from the utility) just to preserve all the phone jacks in the house.
Good luck! |

I'm a little confused as to what you're saying i should do. Are you saying I should disconnect the main wire coming from the street from everything, then splice the 2 brown wires that are going to the circuit board (or something)?
What about the red and the green? They only seemed to be going to the test jack. Does that mean they are completely unnessary? |

First, figure out where all the wires come from. You should have two choices, the street or your house. Then, make sure that the wires from the street connect to nothing, they should be left open. All the wires that go to the house should remain connected as they are now, but NOT tied to the street wires. |

If the brown wires exclusively go to the house, and the red/green only come from the street, yes, but put tape or something on the red/green so they won't wind up getting accidentally connected. |

OK, now i'm angry/confused. I unplugged all the wires in the box and still get a dial tone in the house. How is this possible? |

Unless your NIB is not regulation, there are two sides to the box. One is the Customer side (which the mod plug) and the other is the "locked" side which has the wiring. |
