Number tone like clockwork

I've recently set up my parents with Vonage, they love it. They have two complaints.

1. Caller ID. They ported their number over and when they call people it does not show their name, just Illinois Call then number.

2. I've noticed talking to them that there is sometimes a random tone, like they pushed a number button by accident. It seems to happen every few minutes pretty regular. They don't hear it on their end.

Any ideas? Thanks.

1. Unfortunately that's the way it is with Vonage. Maybe someday they will implement the ability to set your name for outgoing CID, but not at this time.

2. What happens is a particular tone in their voice is detected by the codec as a DTMF tone. Some people's voices are more prone to generate these DTMF tones than others. Strange, yes, but that's just the way Voip works because packets are sent over the internet instead of telephone signals carried over copper wires. Only you hear it because the codec is decoding it on your end as a DTMF tone.

And on the DTMF tone deal, it's usually set off by a female's voice. Something in their intonation and pitch of their voice. Happens to my Mom all the time.
