I live on Vancouver Island and I am having quality issues, lag, noisy line and dropped calls. We have been dealing with Vonage for months on the issue. Is anyone here having similar problems?

Everything has been good here (I'm in Saanich). I'm using Shaw's high speed Internet service, and have the LinkSys RTP300. My main phone is a Panasonic KX-TG5421 digital cordless phone. I've been a Vonage customer since January, and haven't experienced any problems or issues whatsoever.

Shaw cable, I have done all the tests with them - high speed, no problem. I have done ping plotters through both and seperate. The is no problem with the shaw part. I have sent all the test results to Vonage when I finished them and then never heard back from the guy that I was dealing with.

Are your problems showing up when you call other Vonage customers, or only when calling POTS lines?

Diagnosing this sort of thing is always complex due to the number of factors. However, it might be worth testing with another Vonage and Shaw customer here on the island to see if you have the same voice problems as you are experiencing, and then do a detailled traffic analysis between your two IPs to see if you can detect any network issues.

If not, you can at least take your own internal network and Shaw out of the equation (well, Shaw for the most part at least -- you can at least discount that it is some sort of general packet loss or delay from them, although there could still be routing issues between your system and the Voip <--> POTS gateway server).

I have been a Vonage customer for 1 year 1 month now.
my ISP is Shaw; I use Shaw Extreme with a Motorolo sb5100 cable modem, a Lynksys RT31P2 and the HBB.
At first I thought i was going to crawl back to Telus...
then it somehow got better once I learned about Port Forwarding on Vonages router and how to configure my software Firewall (ZA). Then just last week I bought the "Hawking Broadband Router" for deeper control of the QOS and now its GREAT. I notice a slight slight echo when i call from a government location but otherwise its great now

I am in Kelowna and have had similar problems recently. I am on Shaw standard with Motorola DOCSIS MODEM. Staticy calls and delay. The person on the other end summed it up today by saying that they felt like we were talking on walkie talkies where they should say "over" when they finished a sentence.

These are local business calls where I need to be clear and concise about why they should use my services etc. It is not acceptable for me.

Most local calls seem to be ok so it is not consistently bad. No matter what I just wish it was more consistent. It's like it's the luck of the draw whether you hit a good PSTN gateway or whatever the root of the problem is!

I love my Vonage and all their features and will never go back to Telus even if I have to loose sales. This IS a big problem for me though and since Shaw does not offer Digital Phone in my area (yet) I don't really have an alternative. Vonage better get their act together or I will have to bail once Shaw gives me an alternative (supposedly soon so I am told).

My first post... just found this site and forum; very cool!

I got my Vonage in Kelowna in March 2005; moved to Victoria in May; then to Sidney in March 2006. My experience is similar to the previous poster and the OP: very often (I'd say usually) good quality, but often not. Echoes, delays, occasionally noisy lines. I've also had others suggest the 'Over' radio protocol to avoid walking on one another.

I'm just beginning my research here, but it sounds like there's some tuning stuff that can be done to help? I've also seen posts elsewhere about Shaw's QoS offering and suspicions that they're hobbling Voip service.

If anyone can point me to any threads on either subject, I'd be grateful. (Yes, I will try the search also.)

Update: just had a horrible-quality conversation with (ironically) Shaw Cable. 2-3 second delay, very noisy, virtually unworkable.

Came here and ran the tests, and this is what I get:
Download 761,248 bps
Upload 481,144 bps
QOS 16%
RTT 90 ms
MaxPause 659 ms

This looks awful to me. Any suggestions for dealing with this?? Is it worth pursuing with Shaw? I'm not completely averse to paying the extra $10/mo for Extreme w/ QoS service, if it really does solve the problem, but right now I'm ready to toss Vonage altogether.
