Ok, so a month ago, I decided to try and use phonetray and a modem so I can set up blocking and such, since Vonage won't add this feature.. I bought a cheap modem on ebay, it's a V.92 modem, made by Dynex (model DX-M100).. so I installed the modem, have phonetray all set up, but it shows all my calls as 'unavailable ID' the "fix CID" button in phonetray is not available for some reason. I found another program called 'Identafone Pro' it allows me to set up the modem init. strings.. I tried a bunch, found a couple that finally said "ok" but when i dial fom my cell it just shows 'ring' 'ring' in the terminal.. this Identafone program says the modem is CID capable, and like I said some Init strings show 'ok' in the terminal window, namely +FCLASS=8 and +VCID=1 .. but none will show my CID..
I was also reading that Canada uses some weird CID setup, that alot of modems don't recognize.. but I figure that Vonage wouldn't be using that standard as it's a US based service right? or is it because I have a CDN number (based in London 519) that I am still seeing weird stuff???
does anyone have any idea's?
thanks.. oh, CID works just fine on all the phones in the house, just not on the computer.. computer modem 'line' jack is plugged into RT31P2, then house is plugged into modem 'phone' jack...

The Caller ID standard is the same for the US and Canada. Equipment that works for one should work for the other. That being said, not all modems support Caller ID. And the ones that do have different interfaces for providing that information to the host system. So your modem may very well support receiving Caller ID information but the program you are using does not know how to get that information from the modem. To complicate things even more, the Microsoft TAPI (telephony API) doesn't obtain the Caller ID information from the modem itself (unless that has changed--it might have) so the program you are using needs to directly communicate with the modem.
Check out http://www.kengolf.com/en/voice-modem.htm for a way to try to get Caller ID information from your modem using a modem terminal program (such as Hyperterminal). |

I have been using phonetray for well over a year and have gone through several modems. Some worked fine then all of a sudden stopped working.
I recently purchased a Jaton WinComm V.92 voice modem and it works great. Cost me $15 from Ebay.
Most modems are picky on CallerID signals it's just par for the course. |

When you buy cheap equipment, don't be surprised that it fails quickly. I'm still using a US Robotics V.Everything modem from 1992 as my primary modem, gets used daily...and it's still every bit as good as it was back then. Granted, the modem STILL sells for $280. 5 hurricanes and it's still going strong. |
