Hello,

I just moved to a new condo. It is equipped with a USTec UX-226 unit in the bedroom closet, a basic structured wiring system.

http://www.ustecnet.com/support/manuals/UStec_Product_Guide_07-01.pdf

I hooked up my cable modem in the UX-226 hub. Vonage works fine if I plug directly my Motorola VT1005 phone adapter to the modem (with RJ45 cable) and my phone directly to the phone adapter (with RJ11 cable).

The whole point is: I don't want to have my phone in the bedroom closet! I would like to install it in the kitchen, where there is wall outlet for the phone jack.

Here is the problem:
I moved the phone in the kitchen and plugged it to the wall outlet.
Then I left the VT1005 hooked up to the cable modem in the closet hub. I then take a RJ11 phone cable, connecting the Phone Port of the VT1005 to the "Telco In" outlet in the UX-226 unit,
I made sure the wire coming from the kitchen was in place in one of the Phone Output in the UX-226.
With this configuration, I don't get a dial tone. Vonage won't work.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the RJ31X security interface port. I am not using this port at all (I don't have an alarm) so there is nothing plugged into that port.

Does anyone have an idea about what is going on?

Thanks!

The RJ31-X shouldn't be an issue as long as nothing is plugged into it. With your adapter plugged into the telco plug, do you get a dial tone if you plug your phone into one of the ten phone outputs? If the answer is no, then there's a problem involving the UX-226.

If the answer is yes, then temporarily pull the kitchen and adapter plugs from the 226 and connect them together using one of those adapters that you can get at Radio Shack. Do you get dial tone in the kitchen now? If not, the cable you're dealing with either doesn't go to the kitchen or is bad.

Naturally, you'll want to check all of your cables and be sure that they're good.

drumkid and I resolved this offline, but I wanted to post for others reference. Turns out the UX-226's RJ31X port does NOT have the internal wiring or something. This distribution panel comes with a RJ45 Connector with the two loopbacks being done in this connector.
It basically just is a RJ45 plug with jumpers (Pins tied together: 1to4, 5to8).
This plug is required if an alarm system is NOT plugged in. We both confirmed this behavior.

drumkid's problem was that a technician that was unfamiliar with the UX-226 simply unplugged everything from it(including the loopback connector) and neglected to return it to its original state.

Thanks for that feedback. Whodathunk that a connector clearly labelled RJ31 in the company literature wouldn't have the proper internal jumpers?

BrettaMan,
I am having the same problem. I do not have the loopback plug. I tried to make a loopback plug myself and put that in RJ31X port but still cant get the dialtone in any of the ports. How did you resolve this. Please let me know.

Thanks.
