Has anyone with Vonage successfully used QoS with a 10Mbps connection?

I have a Linksys WRT54G router with an enhanced firmware and PAP2 device that sits behind this router. QoS works fine with the exception that it slows my 10Mbps connection down to aout 6.5Mbps. I heard that this is a limitation of the Linksys router who does not have a powerful to perform QoS on faster connections.

Any ideas how use the full 10Mbps of my Internet connection and still be able to have QoS enabled for Vonage? Maybe I'll have to ditch the WRT54G and install Vonage router up front to handle the QoS. I'm not sure that it would handle 10Mbps of bandwidth any better though..

Fred,

If you really need the 10Mbps then you will need to get a "real" router.

I don't mean to sound silly with this but if the 6.5 isn't enough and you see the the speed degrading like this then I believe you need a business class router.

Since the have much larger processors and more memory, you probably won't have this type of problem.

The last thing I would do would be to put the Vonage device first. You will often see people say in here that the Vonage devices are good Voip devices, but poor routers. I think putting a Vonage device first would only make the situation worse.

You might also consider a hardware based solution for QoS. I use a Hawking Broadband Booster for this instead of QoS on the router and it works very well.

I can't say that you won't have a similar problem, but it might be another possible option.

Thanks for the reply John. I think I actually might have solved my problem.

I realized that there is no need to do downstream QoS for Vonage but only upstream. I am using the DD-WRT firmware which asks for both values when enabling QoS so I simply put 0 for downstream and left the upstream QoS value to 800Kbps.

Worked like a charm
