PostPosted: Fri May 12, 2006 10:50 pm    Post subject: Which product should I look into for better QoS? Reply with quote Back to top

So I'm having a problem that others seem to be having. When I'm uploading files via torrents or FTP or any other way, the outbound voice gets very gargled.

My current setup is:

Comcast Modem > RTP300 (DMZ open) and Setup for QoS > D-Link DI-624.

I've tried switching the D-Link and the RTP300, but to no avail.

Bandwidth tests usually run around the 6.5up and 350k down.

So I after reading a few threads I think my real choices are to:

1. Buy a Linksys WRT54G and get some 3rd party firmware that handles QoS better

OR

2. Buy a D-Link 102 Internet/VoIP accelerator. Seen Here

I've read the D-Link 102 works decently. It is easy to set up.

I like my D-Link router, so that is one reason I wouldn't get the Linksys one, but anyway. . .

What do you people think? Anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I think you have the options highlighted.

There are a few other threads in the forum that talk about this and people using QoS on a Router versus a booster (we talked about the Hawking device, but I think the D-Link uses the same technology)

Here are a few threads that talk about some of the topics:

http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic13475.html

http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic11742.html

http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic13752.html

I personally use the Hawking device and I think it works very well.

And here is a link to Nate Hoy's Articles on Voip and QoS, etc.

He has some great details about QoS if you choose to go with a new router.

Hope this helps.

Update:

So I bought the DI-102 and it seems to work great.

Before plugging in the DI-102 I ran a test on www.testyourvoip.com and the best I could get was a 3.7 without anything else running (NO torrents, other computers, etc).

I then plugged in the DI-102 and got a 4.4 rating without anything running.

Since then, I have been running uTorrent and downloading and seeding a few random torrents for testing and I ran www.testyourip.com a few times. I got rating between 3.7 and 4.0, which is very good considering the traffic. Plus when I'm not on the phone the upload speed for the torrents does not seem to be effected.

I've also talked to a few people when the files have been seeding and they reported no static or breakups.

So I'm happy. It was a breeze to set-up and it seems to work brilliantly. At this point I'd recommend it. If things change I'll update it.
