PostPosted: Fri May 12, 2006 4:25 pm    Post subject: Motorola Voice Terminal VT1005v can't find IP address Reply with quote Back to top

I use a Motorola Voice Terminal VT1005v with a cable modem. It's been working fine since last November and all of a sudden just quit. I have internet connection and can surf with it plugged in, but the light blinks twice indicating that it is trying to find an IP address. After spending all my cell phone minutes with tech and getting nowhere, I hung up.

He told me I couldn't possibly be connected, but I was surfing while talking to him. I called my ISP and they think maybe the unit is bad.

Don't know what to do from here. I can't afford to call tech again. If I buy a new one, will I be able to set it up without calling tech?

not unless you set up a totally new account. otherwise you'll have to call.
and you have to call to cancel Vonage service.
catch 22's are great...

Thanks. My first reaction to all of this was to cancel, but the wait time was going to be 25 minutes. Let's see, 25 minutes @ $.45 per minute? Geez! Wink

I assume that you have gone through the various unplug/replug routines in the proper order. Are you able to log into the adapter's setup routine to look at its status?

If not your LAN IP might have gotten changed on you. Since the Motorola adapter's address is http://192.168.102.1, set your computer to a static IP of http://192.168.102.x (where x is 2 or more), then use your browser to log into your adapter.

You may then be able to reset some IP's to make it happy again.

Good luck

I'm assuming that you are using Windows XP, and that it works something like mine. Here goes:

From the desktop, click on "My Computer" then "Control Panel" then "Network Connections." Then from the list (if any) right click on "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties" from the drop-down list. Under the "General" tab of properties scroll down in the window with all of the protocols to "Internet Protocol TCP/IP." Click it to highlight it (not the check mark in the box in fron of it, but on the words, "Internet Protocol TCP/IP."). Next click on the "Properties" box just below. Inder its "General" tab, make a note of any settings that are there so you can go back and fix it, just in case. Now select "Use the following IP address: and set the IP to 192.168.102.x (where x is 2 or more), the Subnet to 255.255.255.0, and the Default Gateway to 192.168.102.1 and click okay. Click okay all the way back out to your desktop.

Next open your browser and log into http://192.168.102.1 (you might have to use the username "router" and the password "router" but I forget). In any case you should be able to check the status of the adapter (write down or print out all of the numbers for the "go back and fix" reason above) and go into its basic and advanced setup to make changes, disable DHCP if another router or device is doing it, set static IPs, an all sorts of other interesting and dangerous stuff. Page 19 et.seq. in the user guide should help you from here.

Again, good luck. I hope this helps. If it doesn't, give me advanced warning so I can check if my passport is current. Smile

Okay, when the router is plugged in, I get the correct IP address, but no internet access. When the router is not attached, I have internet access. I called my ISP and he went through several steps with me and is 99% certain that the router is bad.

I'll go by Circuit City tomorrow and pick up a new router and see what happens. If I can't get it working without calling Vonage tech service, I will disconnect the service and never darken the doors again.

Appreciate all the excellent help here!

EDIT: Thank goodness for weekend minutes on my cell phone! Rolling Eyes

I assume you are talking about the Vonage router, ot the VT1005 adapter. You will have to call technical support in order for them to change the MAC address and not cancel service or start a new service. It SHOULD be a relatively painless procedure, but knowing their tech support,... I don't know. Question

Hmmm, my ignorance of what these are is evident. All I have is the VT1005 adapter...thought it was called a router. Embarassed

In that case, I won't waste my money buying a new one. My recent experience with the tech support was so bad that I will just drop them and pay a little more for another service with my provider.

Thanks for the heads up!
