Shoot, why not just imprison and torture everyone until we find all of the terrorists? Constitution, what constitution?

I love this line:

"Son, we live in a world that has walls and those walls need to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lieutenant Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and curse the Marines; you have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives and that my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives."

"You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use then as the backbone of a life trying to defend something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to."

Sometimes art does imitate life.

, if you do work for the government then you'd know that they hire a ton of Mormons for the NSA, secret service, and so forth.

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately for the telcos) all of that is moot because the information they gave the NSA did not contain any individually identifiable data and was therefore completely within the law. The information had been anonymized, as reported by USA Today (but that little tidbit is often ignored by the fear mongers).

This is false. The infomation included the phone numbers of both ends of the phone call. It is true that the phone companies did not provide the names of the callers, but that's entirely unnecessary, as it is trivial to figure out the name from the phone number, as this information is available in publically available databases.

Again, the data was *NOT* anonymized.

If they want to monitor who is calling who, thats just fine with me. If John Doe in the good ole USA is getting, or placing 30 calls a week to Achmed, (fictional known terrorist) in Pakistan... Dammit, I want someone to check into it and see what the hell they are talking about!

Again, to clarify - this is *NOT* about checking in on people calling outside the country (Ahmed in Pakistan or whatever) or other suspicious communications. This is about the government monitoring *every* phone call within the US. Again, think of it:

Cheating on your wife? Someone in the government knows.
Moonlighting on your job? Someone in the government knows.
Seeing a psychologist? Someone in the government knows.

Do you know what the goverment is going to do with the information or who they'll leak it to? What guarantees do you have?

I have to say, I'm rather surprised to see so many conservatives, who typically say they oppose big government, saying they're okay with this.

It is correct.... Mormons are respected for their linguistic abilities and that's why NSA hires them. With Mormon missionaries living in countries speaking the language for 2 years. They come home and BYU is one of the most active recruiting grounds for NSA and CIA.
