is it possible?
i know that my computers can get on his network fine, but how am i supppossed to run my vonage off it since I have to have an ethernet port to plug the phone adapter into.
i've heard of using a router to bridge it....is that just a rumor, and if not, is it hard to do? if this is possible i may not even need to get DSL, i hate dsl, just to get dsl i have to get a land line through the phone co too. And than they add all that bull$ hit extra fees and huge $50+ installation/activation fee. just ridiculous.

Does the term "Theft of Service" mean anything to you?

This is not a good idea. Beyond the theft of bandwidth aspect, you'll have no guaranteed quality of service, your latency between your subnet and your neighbours network is going to have a negative impact on your voice quality, and you're completely at your neighbours whim.

Assuming they don't know enough about networks to know to secure their WiFi access point against asshats like yourself, as soon as they notice their bandwidth is getting sucked away they're going to call their broadband provider for tech support. As soon as they discover you're the culprit, at the very least they're going to password protect their access point, and you'll lose both your network and your phone service in one fell swoop.

Don't be a thief. Pay up like the rest of us.

Yaz.

The performance of even trying to do something like this would result in poor phone quality and would not allow you to troubleshoot any problems. Besides, the added traffic on his line might just tip off him or his ISP that there may be a problem with his line and you would get busted. The theft of service is not worth it, not to mention unethical.

Geez, the nerve of some people..it never seizes to amaze me. The term "asshats" definitely applies to this individual.

You cheap bastard. With the way you've worded your inquiry, it's obvious that you are doing this without the network's owner being aware of it. Prices of internet service are coming down (in most areas), and now you can get broadband service for as low as $14 in some areas.

Now, if you made friends with the neighbor, you could probably get a router which supports prioritizing the phone calls for his end and a wireless bridge for your end, but without knowing what applications they're using on their network, don't expect any reliable phone calls.

My neighbor has an ethernet bridge setup with a switch. he has a machine and a broadvoice portable phone connected into it and runs over my cable line fine. He also has a repeater over there for other machines. I have one AP in my house that he is connected to.

There are some devices like the D-Link DWL-2100AP that you can set to client mode. Once you configure it in client mode, just hook it up to Vonage or a switch.
