Well...that sounds a lot like the kind of tech support that I have been getting as well. I have discovered that I almost have to know what needs to be done so that I can tell them what to do. Very frustrating.

None the less, my four voice lines work very well...it is only the VT2442 that is causing me grief. One must be very insistent about the particular adapter that one wants. I let them send the VT2442 because I didn't think I would actually be using the fax line. Now that I'm trying to use it, I wish I had insisted on either the RTP300 or the WRTP54G adapter, as both of those models have been working very well for me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for better firmware, but If the VT2442 cannot connect with the firewall enabled, how is different firmware going to help with that problem?

The Thibor firmware has shorter TTL (Time to Live) times on connections and also allows you to see ALL routings being done on the router (including Universal Plug & Play) along with the ability to control these. Random dropouts could be caused by the router's routing tables becoming full, overloading the WRT54GS' CPU, or could be caused by the Vonage adapters sending out UPnP signals for the ports they need. With the 3rd party firmware you could telnet/ssh into the router and watch the various graphs & statistics to see where the problem is actually occuring. With the Linksys firmware, that's not gonna happen.

As far as multiple adapters go, I have 2 PAP2s, and RTP300, and my laptop's SIP phone all on this network with no issues... Same for my network at work, where there's an Asterisk system with quite a few PAP2s floating around. Running IPCop for a router on all of these anymore 'though.

Well, I have to admit that I can't relate what you are saying to the apparent need to disable the firewall in order to get the VT2442 to connect.

On the other hand, I am considering replacing the WRT54GS with some kind of dual WAN router anyway, so at that point there will probably be a completely different set of issues. There are about a dozen different devices to choose from, ranging in price from about $100 into the thousands.

From what I have been reading, at least several of them are not able to handle load balancing and fail-over for Voip, which of course would be important to me, since I rely rather heavily upon VoIP...

Let me break it down into simple terms. The 3rd party firmware is more robust & better suited for large volumes of traffic. 3rd party firmware also has more diagnostic tools to determine how traffic is flowing, ports are forwarded, and how the router is running. None of this is possible with the factory firmware. Give it a try...if you don't like it, you can always re-load the factory firmware back on it.

FWIW, the SPI "firewall" in the Linksys firmware is pretty rudimentary at best and are well-known to cause problems, especially with Voip and streaming. It's more of a decoration than useful tool compared to the hardware firewalls such as those made by Watchguard, Sonicwall, and Fortinet, or something like IPCop.

One other thought which crossed my mind... disable MAC cloning on all of your Voip devices. I'm wondering if maybe one of the Voip boxes has acquired the MAC addy of a different device or computer on the network.
