I have been using Vonage for 2 months now and up until 2 weeks ago my calls to Mexico have been perfect. But now, every international call (I mean every call) I make to Mexico is static & choppy filled on my end and my voice is warbled on their end. If they call me...everything is fine. Note: all local and US long distance is perfect audio for me and the other party .

I'm afraid it is the provider in Mexico and that there is nothing I can do, but if there was a work around, I figure I could find it here.

Here's the detailed info...

1. Your location Albuquerque, NM
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) ComCast
3. Upload and download speeds 1.681Mpbs, 356Kbps
4. Modem make and model Motorola SB5100
5. Type of Vonage adapter used WRTP54G
6. Setup of Network Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc Phone rings, can't hear person on other end...they can hear me
8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston.

I do also have 2.4G wireless phones, but I disabled my wireless feature in my modem (beside I figured I would have bad audio on local calls if that was the problem), and they are 4+ feet away. I am using my house wiring, but have tried pluging directly into the Vonage device w/o any improvement.

These audio issues occur even when the PC is off.

Would going through the hassle of notifying Vonage help?
Are these choppy issues usually temporary and go away on their own?
Does anyone know if calling the "magic number" (Vonage CEO) would do any good?

Thanks for any and all information.

Your Voip test is less than stellar on the uplink, but since you're having good results on domestic calls, it wouldn't seem that that's the answer. Have you verified that calls placed from another phone to Mexico don't have a similar problem?

Dealing with customer service may not be any fun, but it may be worthwhile to get them involved. It would be interesting to have them place a call to your party using their Voip line and see if the results are similar.

Steve48,

I too noticed the uplink looked pretty lousy (high packet discards), but the local and US long distance has been OK as far as quality (so far away). I have called Mexico with a cell phone and have not had any garbled calls.
Yesterday I was able to talk for ~2 minutes with my Vonage before it filled with popping and static. I'm now at the point where I am seriously considering buying a phone card and using that in combination with my phone to call Mexico. However, if I resort to that I might as well dump Vonage and go back to Quest, as international to Mexico was my sole reason for switching in the first place.
I'll try and block out 4 hours of my life tonight to talk to Vonage.

Mexicobnd,

I've noticed the same thing! It has helped me when we both are using a regular telephone, not an RF phone (meaning: regular, not a base with a portable) Hope this helps!

This evening I tried a regular phone and plugged it straight into the Vonage device...same problems. I even lowered the bandwidth (~24 hours ago) to see if it help, but alas this evening I still could not hear the other person in Mexico.
So I sat down for what I was thinking would be an eternity with the Vonage support, but in less than 30 minutes I went through the 2 levels of "Ma India," got a work order issued and told to wait 72 hours. The line is still crappy, but it did not take nearly as long communicating (I was very patient and tried very hard) my phone issues.
So, I'll post here what the solution is.... If one is found Lol

Well, I have to give Vonage a 2.5 out of 10 on this. Well after the time period of 3 days I was told they would get back to me I have heard nothing. A "we're working on it" courtesy email would be nice. Anyway, the only reason I am giving them a 2.5 is because family in Mexico told me that "some Gringo has been calling our house." Since they don't speak English, they haven't a clue what is being said. However, since all 3 numbers that I gave to Vonage are getting these calls, I assume someone is testing something.

While I am ticked off by the lousy response to the line quality issues, I can't give up the Vonage. We have just decided to buy phone cards. The phone cards I get are for .0245 / minute. No connect charges either. Way cheaper than the Vonage rates any day.

As long as the local and US long distance is OK, I'll hang tight. Who knows, maybe calls to Mexico will be free. Of course then I'll really start to complain. Wink
