Has anyone tried patching serveral MTA devices into a small office PBX such as TalkSwitch? Basically, 2 MTA devices would be configured with 2 lines each and then the TalkSwitch would use the 4 Vonage lines. Would it follow that I could then enable Call Hunting on one of the Vonage numbers (so it rings the other lines in order) and then give only that number out as my office number? Is this a bad idea?

Hello Maxwell,

We have lots of customers doing exactly that. Yes, you are correct that call hunting would be what you want to do, and, you give out the main number (line 1 say). If line 1 busy, it rolls to line 2, then 3, and so on. Really, this is no different that traditional land lines, except, you have more control instead of the phone company. Your last line might take messages if you get more calls than you have lines. This allows you to monitor whether or not you have enough phone lines. A few messages a month and you are probably ok. A number of messages each day means you likely do not have enough lines or people. So, it helps you see if you are sized correctly.

Using call logging, you can then also tell how many times calls roll to your last line. If you capture the data, then, you might see you almost never get a call on line 4, (or maybe never at all). In that case, you have too many lines perhaps.

Finally, some customers don't put all their lines into their outgoing Talkswitch line hunt group. This way, you reserve a line for incoming calls hat someone might make a call out on if all lines are busy.

There are numerous ways to set things up, but, you got the basic idea!
