For the past two days, my rtp300 has been acting up. Today the phone stopped working. After a reset, the power light continuously flashes so it has to be updating. But it has been doing this for hours.

Voice status shows: Provisioning succeeded
Call 1 status shows: line fail

Getting hold of support is impossible.

Any ideas? I have tried:

o. Power cycling the cable modem and rtp300
o. Power off - sit for 30 seconds - power on
o. Reset switch

Are you able to access the internet through the RTP300? If not, can you get on the internet by plugging a computer directly into the modem? Can you run a test at www.testyourvoip.com?

If you're getting good Voip results, either with or without the RTP300 in the circuit, then it's likely that the unit is dead. Unfortunately, that means a session with customer service, unless you want to just go out and replace it.

I should have mentioned that I do have internet access.

testyourvoip.com came back with score of 4.2. That is okay.

After an 1.5 hrs on the phone w/customer support they disconnected me.

Now back on for 30 minutes... Lots of fun.

The rtp300 was dead. They swapped it out... and sent me the wrong router!

They said I was getting another rtp300, the invoice in the box says they sent me an rtp300. But in fact, I got a Motorola vt2442.

Now I get the joy of sitting on hold forever to make sure they aren't going to charge me because they screwed up. Slam Head

Have you tried hooking up the VT2442? If they at least got it registered correctly, it should work. Unless you're partial to the RTP300, the VT2442 should serve.

The VT2442 is installed and working fine. I am just annoyed that they sent me the wrong device (per their invoice and their stating what they were sending). The real annoyance is that I have to call them because now I can't just swap the routers out of the box. I need to send back the original Linksys box (which I don't have).

If you're returning the dead RTP300 to Vonage, they may not care about the box. In any case, it would be appreciated if you re-post in a few days and let us know how things are going. The VT2442 is relatively new, and you will have experience with both it and the RTP300. I'd be interested in your opinion about the two.

As requested, I am posting my thoughts on the VT2442 after replacing a Linksys rtp300. If someone wants to branch this into it's own post, feel free to copy/paste.

Overall, I am satisfied. The port forwarding and IP filters capability is well layed out. Our call quality has improved the slightest amount so I can't say for sure (only one week to judge by). The wife has complianed quite a bit about vonage's call quality and I hoped this router would make a big improvement.

I'll give you a quick comment on a few features. Here goes.

Superficial:
1. The default login is router/router instead of admin/admin. Not a big deal but it is different than other routers I have used.
2. Okay style. Not great but the LEDs are clear and grouped so that you don't mistake WAN led for a LAN connection.

Usability:
1. The first page displayed (home page) after logging in tells you your LAN and WAN status and WAN IP address. Also status for your Vonage connection. This is MUCH better than the linksys which requires that you navigate through menus to see this basic information.
2. The home page also has a full description of each top level menu's purpose. Very nice.
3. Help is wretched bad. There is no context sensitive help nor is the help very useful. For example, "Setup-Lan Configuration" has a selection "Enable DHCP Relay" that I wanted to know exactly what it did but there was nothing in help on "Lan Configuration" much less settings inside.

This would have nice as a context sensitive "?" help link beside the setting. Instead, I had to search for a manual on the Motorola website.

4. Assigning a static IP address to DHCP clients is very clear and easy to configure. Tell it the hostname and MAC address and you are done. I like specifying the hostname where others would only specify the MAC address.

5. Port forwarding and IP filters comes with a large set of well organized preset rules. You can also add your own custom rules. Very nice.

6. It supposedly supports ssh access but I could not get it to work. I would connect but it would never accept the password. There was absolutely no help on this.
