I have an answering machine conneced to my Vonage line. I am having trouble remotely accessing it. I have to use the "pound key" to get to my messages, but the line seems to ignore it. I used the machine without a problem before Vonage.

That's odd. Try to get someone to call while you're there and able to hear what's going on (or call yourself from a cell phone). Do you hear a tone from the answering machine speaker when the pound key is pushed by the caller?

Due to the nature of Voip, Vonage does not carry DTMF tones like a normal landline. Instead, your adapter tries to recognize them and re-create them locally.

This is also the cause of occasional "beeps" you hear on the line that sound like someone pressed a number button. The voice on the other side sounds like a DTMF tone. My mother's voice does this occasionally, once or twice in a 30-minute call, and sometimes it happens on conference calls with lots of people.

You may want to call Customer Service and ask about this, and see if there is a way to adjust the sensitivity, or duration of the recreated tones.

Another test - call someone and ask them to press their pound key. If you hear the beep, and it is really short, then what you want to do is have Vonage increase the duration. It's a setting on your adapter, but you don't have access to it.

Which Vonage adapter do you have? I have an RTP300 and have been trying to get Vonage to fix the adapter for almost a year now... they've made improvements with some of the firmware versions, but it's not 100% working yet.

I have Linksys WRTP54G.

Thanks for the feedback. I've tried it with my cell phone and can hear the Vonage line making the "pound sound" but apparently not what the answering machine wants. I'll get someone to try it from a landline.

Looks like I'll be entering the "Vonage customer service queue"!

Also, I cannot get my fax program to make a call -- dialing sounds but no call is actually made. Is this a related problem?
