PostPosted: Thu May 27, 2004 12:56 am    Post subject: Vonage and a Linksys EFAH05W workgroup hub problems!! Reply with quote Back to top

I have multiple PCs hooked to the internet through a Linksys EFAH05W workgroup hub. The only way I have been able to get this combination to work is:

Cable modem>>>Vonage box>>>Linksys hub>>>PCs

After several hours of PC being on I loose internet connectivity and have to power down Cable, Vonage, Linksys and reboot PC(hassle)

Have tried several time to configure as:

Cable modem>>>Linksys hub>>>Vonage box and PCs

In this config Vonage works but no internet connection for PCs

Is there a way to not loose PC connection in first configuration?

Or is there a way to get the second configuration to work?(is it possible with Linksys EFAH05w workgroup hub?)

Any help would be good,

Dirty Steve

PC is plugged into Linksys hub that is plugged into Moto box.

When I setup Cable modem>>>Linsys hub>>>Moto box and PC(PC plugged to hub not Moto) Phone works but can't get PC to connect to internet.

Is the problem the Linksys hub? Do I have to change to one of the routers suggested by Vonage?

Static IPs maybe? I have no idea.

It sounds like your broadband provider can assign multiple IPs and is doing all the DHCP assignments, thus you're ability to use a hub where most need a router. If so, I suggest using a switch instead of a hub (it directs traffic only to the recipient device) or changing to a router as the "first up" box behind the modem.

How many PCs do you generally use, and are they all set up to use DHCP (allow an IP to be assigned to them)?

Perhaps you can only receive two IP addresses from your ISP, and having three devices requesting them is the problem. I would definitely try a router.

I've had similar connectivity problems using a Linksys EFAH05W.
* No success connection powerup sequence: Cable modem D-Link DCM-202 >> Router Linksys EFAH05W >> Computer MS Windows XP Pro SP2 ==> kaput
* Successful connection powerup sequence: Cable modem >> Computer ==> successful
* Successful connection powerup sequence: Cable modem >> Computer,, reconnect: Cable modem (not turned off) >> Router EFAH05W, then power up >> Computer (either not turned off or turned off)
* NOTE: The Linksys PAP2 telephone adapter never was able to function properly with the EFAH05W. The router never properly assigned an address. Apparently it merely passed through the native address of the computer & ignored the telephone adapter. Perhaps if the EFAH05W could be reset, but Linksys forgot to include a reset button. Whoops! It's now, and perhaps always was, a paper weight.
* NOTE: After all this, a D-Link DI-704 router was substituted & within minutes the Telephone adapter and Computer were up and running without any problems.

Rustcity:

Are you still using the DLink DCM-202 cable modem. If so have you had any issues with it and especially using it with Vonage?

My RCA seems to have crapped out. I've picked up a DCM-202 and it seems I have a performance gain. I've ordered Vonage and the Linksys unit should be showing up early this week. I'm also seriously considering the Motorola Surfboard SB5100 as it seems to be getting a lot of support from users.
