PostPosted: Tue May 02, 2006 9:58 am    Post subject: Call Forwarding / Hardwire Question Reply with quote Back to top

I am going to hardwire Vonage into my house. I am currently waiting for my number to switch over and have a virtual number in the interim.

1) If I set up my account to forward calls from my old number to my new virtual number in the interim, will this work to forward calls to my Vonage line?

2) If so, if I completely disconnect the land line from the outside (at the NID), will the calls still be forwarded, or must I leave the land line working?

Thanks.

  1. There is no reason this wouldn't work. You should, of course, test it.
  2. There is no problem disconnecting the POTS at the NID, it is equivalent to not plugging any phones into the jacks. The one problem I could foresee is your ability to cancel or reinstate forwarding on the account if you have no mechanism to access the line. My suggestion is, if you have a house wired for two lines, that you move your POTS connection to line 2, put Vonage on line 1. Buy a simple line 1/2 splitter and plug it in at a spot where you keep your primary phone. If you need to use line 2 (POTS) you can just move the patch cord into the line 2 jack of the splitter.

Just to be clear... Would it even work if I told Vonage to forward the calls, or would I have to tell my current POTS carrier to forward the calls (since they have control over my old number right now)?

One of the simplest ways for you to accomplish your mission is to ask the telephone company to put your existing line on "Vacation Service". I know SBC offers it here in Houston. At any rate, this will still forward your calls to your specified number from their system. The difference is a lower rate but more importantly you can just call the telephone company and ask them to re-direct the forwarding number as long as you call M-F during business hours.

It has to be your POTS carrier.

Regarding the next posters comment about vacation service, it is a money saving idea, but it can be a bit risky to put a change order in on your account if an LNP request is being processed.

Actually, I'm not going to have anything forwarded. If you use more then 250 minutes and cancel within the 30 day free trial period, you have to pay for the 1st month of service (which would otherwise be free).

Thanks for the help though, everyone.
