I was just shipped a Motorola VT1005 from Vonage to replace my Linksys RT31P2. I just had a few questions about it if anyone knows. I haven't heard too many bad things about this device so I'm assuming the voice quality is generally good as mine seems to be.

My first question is I was curious if anyone has had any problems, voice quality and such with the Motorola. Secondly, the administration page is very generic. I noticed it is technically a router, but does it have QoS built in and firewall features? Even though I'm using it behind my WRT54G, I was just curious if it has those features since they aren't listed in the Admin pages. Lastly, can the Administration pages be accessed remotely or only through the LAN side which looks like it can only use 192.168.100.x?

I haven't had any complaints about voice quality.

I did have a problem with my unit freezing and moved it behind my router. I heard that it was a problem reacting to port scans and that it was fixed (that was two years ago).

The adapter was designed to prioritize traffic if placed between your LAN/Computer and your ISP connection.

The administration can only be accessed through the LAN side. However I thought the IP address could be changed.

It is very hard to configure this device. I used it behind my WRT54G router. I did not use the firewall in the VT1005.

cable -->cable modem-->router-->VT1005

I did set it up with a static IP address so that I could forward ports and do QOS, from the Linksys to the Motorola.

The Vt1005 has a default LAN IP address of 192.168.102.1. When you connect your PC, set the PC up with a static IP address in the range of 192.168.102.n where n is 2-254. Then point your browser to the 102.1 address and it should work. Do not put a switch or router between the two, they should be direct connected.

I used the Vt1005 for about a year and then swapped it out for a P2P. The voice quality was very good, slightly better than the P2P. However, I had problems with choppy sound on incoming calls, which have gone away now.

I just got a VT1005 from Circuit City ($80 but with $100 in rebates) and it is working great. So far... :-) I have it configured:

DSL --> DSL Modem --> VT1005 --> LAN Switch --> everything else

I understand that it is supposed to be able to do voice packet prioritizing when connected this way.

Supposedly it does, unfortunately there's no way to configure it as the VT1005 is very generic in it's settings with no advanced routing or QoS controls. I have my VT1005 sitting behind my WRT54G router which is setup with QoS giving highest priority to my VT1005's MAC address with everything else lower priority. The VT1005's sound quality is very good and my WRT54G handles QoS very nicely so the VT1005 only has to worry about being what it's best at...a Vonage device only and not being used as a router.
