1. Does anyone know what the QoS requirements are bandwidth wise for the Vonage system?
I want to install it on the inside of an existing network and my firewall has QoS capabilities.
2. What protocol is used on the Vonage system? Is it H.323 or SIP?
3. Are there any special considerations to putting the VoiP system in a DMZ with a soft phone on a computer or an IP phone on the internal network?
I would like to be able to segragate the traffic for security reasons obviously.
4. Has anyone used the additional soft phone number for mobile computer systems and if so, how has that worked out?
Thats about all I have for now,

The highest quality for Vonage is using the 90Kbps codec. So you may want to set your Firewall QOS to have committed rate of at least 100Kbps for upstream and downstream.
I'm using a Cisco PIX 501 firewall and have the ATA 186 plugged into the Firewall's switch at 10Mbps Full Duplex.
Vonage uses SIP TCP and UDP at 5061 which is rather odd because the default SIP port is 5060. I have SIP TCP 5060 on Fixup and SIP UDP 5060 - 5062 open for outbound traffic. I use the default PIX 6.3 UDP authentication for incoming traffic and Port translation for security.
Vonage is a SIP based VOIP system and you will need to open the following ports:
UDP 5060 - 5062 (5061 on Cisco ATA 186)
UDP 10000 - 20000 for the actual data traffic and signalling.
Currently, IP phone is not supported by Vonage and the softphone that works is the one that Vonage is currently selling. Vonage is actually using a non-standard ports for their SIP implementation.
You can segregate the traffic by placing it on the DMZ or on its own subnet as long you allow those ports and prioritize them among other traffic on your network.
In term of the soft phone number, I have not played with them enough to provide any answer at this time.

I have a Pix 501 as well. Would you be willing to post the parts of your config having to do with QoS and port forwarding?
Thanks! |

I'm having problems with signaling to my phone from callers. CS blames it on my cable modem. I don't see how that would be with symptoms like a recorded message to caller that the phone number has been disconnected. I've also also tested my connection with "testyourvoip" and got excellent results.
CS is completely unwilling to elevate the problem to level 2. I would like to know some more about the signaling. If SIP uses TCP/IP, i would argue with Vonage that the problem has to be in their equipment.
Thanks, Zoli |
