PostPosted: Sun Apr 30, 2006 12:38 am    Post subject: Sending Fax on a standard Vonage line... Reply with quote Back to top

Right now I have bellsouth phone service. I have two lines in my house.
Both of the lines have a fax machine and a phone hooked up to them. We do not have any dedicated lines for fax or just for phone.

I am wondering if I order two lines from vonage...can i do the same or do i HAVE to order a dedicated fax line from Vonage. I know it is only $9.99, but to have two lines and a fax line with Vonage i would have to have two phone adapters (i have two uniden phones that cost over $160 and I AM NOT going to replace them for a Voip phone). I could find out any info on this.

Btw, they are both HP al-in-one fax print/scan/copy/fax machines.

Also, how is the free motorola Vonage box? I have a Linksys wrt54g that is controlling my network right now that I plan to keep and just add the phone adapter to it...i didn't know if the motorola box is the same as the linksys box....

Dedicated fax line is just stripped down.

I fax just fine over one of my personal lines. However, SOME users will find FAXING over a Voip line, spotty at best. That needs to play a role in your decision.

Poke around the forum and you may find some specific posts related to the HP all-in-ones.

Know nothing about the new motorola box. Where your using it after the router, there will not be much difference in any of the ATAs

I'm a mortgage broker...so my life is handled over a fax machine... lol. It's amazing how these lenders can't get into e-mail and .pdf docs. To me it's just as easy to scan something as a PDF and e-mail it on over.

Right now I'm spending $65.93 with 2 lines (w/ all the features) but without a dedicated fax line through bellsouth (plus all the long distance calls I make). With Vonage I would be spending $65.43 with two lines AND a dedicated fax line. However, if faxing is not so great over VoIP...then maybe i need to stay away with it. Bellsouth is only $12 for a dedicated fax (but you have to pay long distance fees) That really ****. I knew there had to be a catch....the unlimited long distance had me sold.

who knows...maybe I'll give it a try. I want a dedicated fax line so i might just get one of those 500 minute lines or right now and give it a shot with faxing.

I did search the forums and saw some of the stories about people having trouble with faxing, but i saw that they usually had a solution to their problem.

I can successfully fax, but I find that it often takes longer than when using a POTS line. This may be of concern in your business.

In your situation I am suprised you aren't considering an virtual fax solution for incoming and possibly outgoing faxes. That would allow you to handle them without a dedicated line. I would obviously be concerned about confidentiality, but I imagine there are providers set up to service your industry.

I feel like a no0b (even though i've been working on/with computers for over 12 years)... i have never heard of virtual fax services. lol

I did a google search and the ones I found were cheap (most around $10 a month) and it seems like a very good idea. Do you happen to have a preference as to which company to use? Someone that has a decent background?

edit: well, looking deeper...they all sound good, but they charge $0.03-$0.12 per OUTGOING fax. All incoming are free. I send 150+ faxes a month...so that's $22+ a month for a fax line. If you know of a company that is very good then i might give it a shot....the only downside is that over 100 lenders and clients have my fax number...and with a virtual fax solution I wouldn't be able to keep my existing number.

I'm still thinking of giving Vonage a try for a month and see how it works. I'm going to do some more searching with people using Vonage and my exact printer model. (HP Officejet 5610v)

eFax is the most well known and hated provider. I am going to refer you to Fax Beep. Fax Beep is a popular review site and forum for virtual fax services.

I certainly recommend that you try a Vonage line, you can always start by testing outgoing faxes on a new line so that you can keep your existing fax line if you have trouble.

I would warn you to stay away from FAX services with proprietary formats and to be careful of their price comparisons. Most of the fax services include the cost of the fax machine in the price comparisons but do not bother to ask you what percentage of your faxes you will be printing out and thus do not include cost of the printer and supplies.

However, my research shows that, depending on the features you require, you could spend about $15/month.

thanks for the forum. I'll give it a shot. The more I read about it the more i think virtual faxes will be a last resort. I am going to order a standard line and give Vonage a try in a week after i do a little more research.

thanks for the help guys...

One consideration maybe to recieve your faxes to a virtual fax service, and just use Vonage line to send.

But maybe that's not ideal for your situation either.
