Post subject: Wi-fi Zone access in the UK
Can anyone from
Vonage
(or anyone that knows!) comment on the following article for those of us who have the Wi-Fi phones?

Cheers,

From what i can make out anyone with the
Vonage
wireless phone in the coverage area of The Cloud wireless hotspots their
Vonage
handsets will automatically connect to the
Vonage
nextwork allowing you to make or receive calls without you incurring any extra charges.
as some providers on hotspots charge you to use them
Vonage
has teamed up with The Cloud so that you can connect to
Vonage
without any additional charges.
and from what i have read the handset will automatically log on to the nextwork without the need for any additional log on ids or passwords as soon as your in coverage area lol i dont have one of these phones yet but im assuming they scan automatically for a network.
This is The Clouds website
http://www.thecloud.net
and if you go here and enter you town or postcode it will tell you where your closest hotspots are.
it would be good tho for someone with one of the phone to try it out with one of the hotspot and leave feedback on how the quality is
Cheers
Gordy

Last night I had the chance to try the wi-fi at a cloud hotspot....well I just fired the phone up....a couple of seconds later the phone had logged in without any prompts and I was able to make a call.
Well done Vonage....excellent
The only question it now raises in my mind is the whether this will work only on direct Cloud AP's or on partner AP's as well.....anyone know?

This feature works by having The Cloud put the
Vonage
SIP addresses on their "free list" so that their access controllers don't challenge for payment. I expect that the deal is only with The Cloud - though they may expand to others.
The WiFi phone does work in a lot of other places as we have seen many pubs and other shops offer free WiFi without restrictions.

It would be great if this facility were to be expanded. Where I live there are not many free hotspots around. But there are plenty about but all different vendors which is a real pain.
Anyway its a fantastic step in the right direction.
