A quick question, I am thinking of switching to vonage/primus voip, I am currently with bell. I spoke with customer service at both of these companies, and they said I can keep my phone number when I switch from landline to voip, but if I decied to go back (from voip to landline) I will loose my number....is this true?
Also is what is a better highspeed internet provider for voip serice...bell or rogers?
Thanks |

It's true, hard to port number from voip to landline or between voip. |

I'd have to say "neither". Bell and Rogers have the highest prices for residential broadband around. If you live in Ontario/Quebec you can choose from literally hundreds of DSL providers.
http://www.canadianisp.com/ is a huge directory of Canadian ISPs to get you started.
Personally, I've used DSL service from Toronto FreeNet and now I'm on TekSavvy. I don't believe Toronto FreeNet is taking new DSL subscribers now, and they're reselling connections from Magma anyways. I switched to dry DSL from TekSavvy a few months ago and ditched my Bell dialtone for Vonage and haven't looked back. I'd highly recommend TekSavvy, especially if you consider yourself a "techie" and want super-knowledgable support. |

Why can't you port to a traditional telco? I have a number from a traditional telco ported to Vonage. Can I port it back to the telco if I want to? |

Yes you can. They call it "winback". |

I work in a call centre in Canada for a US VoIP company. I've seen first hand that number porting from Vonage USA to the company I work for happens on a daily basis. From my experience it is even sometimes faster. Maybe just a United States thing? |
