PostPosted: Wed Apr 26, 2006 8:31 am    Post subject: New install questions - wrt54g Reply with quote Back to top

I'm getting ready to move to vonage and have a few questions. I currently have a wrt54g running 3.03.1 firmware and a sn beginning with cdf7. Is the F7 version 4? I have ordered a linksys pap2 to sit behind the router for my VoIP.

I'm not sure which 3rd party firmware I should use for my wrt54g. I've seen references to sveasoft and thibor. Is one prfereable to the other for features and stability? If I'm not going to enable QOS, do I need to upgrade to a 3rd party firmware or can I use the standard firmware I have now? In addition to VoIP, I use this router for 2 computers (1 wired and 1 wireless). I have dhcp enabled.

Thanks.

Your CDF7 is a version 2.2, and that will work just fine. Mine's a version 2.0. As you can see in my signature, I'm running Thibor, and I think you'll find more here running that than anything else. Sveasoft has a HUGE number of features, which tends to spell less performance and stability. Sveasoft also charges, while Thibor is free (donations accepted by the author.) Actually, if you really want all the extra bells and whistles, I think there are more here using DD-WRT than Sveasoft, but Thibor stays closer to the original Linksys source, is very stable and performs very well, and has everything that 99% of people will ever use.

As for your statement of "if I'm not going to enable QoS...", you most definitely DO want to enable QoS!

NateHoy is our resident guru on these routers, and he runs Thibor also. He has some excellent guides at:

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/wrt54gl.html

and

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/wrt54glqos.html

Nate refers to the WRT54GL in these guides, but your WRT54G v2.2 is exactly the same, as far as firmware flashing and setup is concerned.
