My apartment complex provides wifi internet service to the whole building, I have talked to Vonage reps and they could not fully answer my question. I told them that I connected to the internet through a wifi connection with a D-link PCI card and they told me I needed a router to connect. So I have a D-link 624 router that I tried to hook up so I could try out vonage, but when I hook up the router I can't connect to the internet, I can't figure out to find my apartments network with the router. I have been told by a friend of mine that routers can't pick up other networks. So here is my question, Can I use Vonage with a wireless (wifi) internet connection, if so what is the best way to set this up? |

You should be able to do this by getting a wireless access point and using it to feed your router or Vonage adapter. |

you can goto best buy and get a wireless gaming bridge.... its used normally for someone to hook up like their playstation to their wireless network, but with ethernet. otherwise, you can use a windows xp computer to bridge ur wireless network to your ethernet port. But this requires that u keep ur computer on 24/7. |

I think I 'll try bridging to my ethernet port, my computer runs XP and already stays on 24/7. Could you point me in the right direction on how to do that |

ya heres what to do.
1.go into network connections in the control panel.
2. get connected to the wireless network on ur laptop.
3. Plug the ethernet cable into the WAN port of the router, and the other end into ur laptop ethernet port.
4. Now in network connections, highlight BOTH the wireless connection, and the ethernet connection(called local area connection). Right click, and select "bridge connections".
5. Thats it.
Sometimes it can be fussy, but just play around with it if it doesnt work. |

If you want to avoid using the desktop as a wireless gateway, and you want a one-box solution, the Linksys WRT54GL with HyperWRT Thibor aftermarket firmware is capable of running in "Wireless Client" mode.
Basically, the router's wireless radio is used to connect to your Wireless ISP (WISP), then acts as a normal wired router, providing four hard-wired Ethernet ports that can all get on the Internet and talk to each other. Firewall function is maintained, just as if you had an Internet connection plugged into the WAN port, so your internal LAN is secure.
In this mode, of course, the WRT54GL cannot act as a Wireless Access Point, since it only has one radio and that is being used to talk to the WISP. But it is a nice, quiet, low-voltage wireless router when configured this way, and you can reboot your computer without losing your Vonage connection. |
