I am in the Sumter, SC area. The only numbers Vonage offers in my local calling area <803 area code> are at Shaw AirForce Base. The exchange they gave me is 666. But when I call form another phone I get some weird message saying that 'it is not neccesary to dial a 1' when dialing this number. I have called other numbers in the 666 exchange and they go through fine, it IS a local number. I can call the number from my cell so its not like no calls will go through at all.I don't want to pay Vonage $10 for a new number and have the same thing happen. Any suggestions ? |

so, you are saying that when you dial YOUR Vonage number from a landline, you get a msg on th landline saying NOT to dial a 1? well, thats what you want isn't it? if you had to dial a 1, you'd be charged LD.. 666 IS a Shaw AFB exchange..
I can't understand what your problem is?
and about 666, I'm surprised that they use the exchange 666 at all in SC.. |

Ohhh.. hrmmm..
so, you're dialing it 7 or 10 digits, and getting a msg to dial this number w/o a 1? but you never dialed the 1?
but you can call from your cell? who is your cell provider? and your landline provider? have you tried form another landline, or another cell?
it may take a day or 2 for the number to be entered, but it's weird, that you can dial other 666 numbers, but not yours..
btw, Vonage shouldn't charge you for swapping a number due to a technical problem, but you'd have to call in to have it done, dont' do it online..
you may want to call your landline provider, and tell them you can't dial a specific number, but can dial others in the same exchange, and that you can reach this problem number via your cell just fine.. |

Yes, Im dialing 7 digits and getting that message without dialing the 1.
My cell provider is SunCom <a reignoal carrier> but we have received calls from Cingular customers. I just realized last night that we have 2 landline providers. When we had local service it was Verizon. But just down the road they have FTC. Have not yet been able to find out if maybe it is only the FTC phones that are having this issue.
I have called Vonage a few times but between their phones being messed up <clicking in an out like a cell phone would> and the Indians not being able to understand what I am trying to say, I didnt have much luck. |

Verizon in Sumter used to be GTE and they have a really bad reputation for being a cut-rate carrier. I would hope that Verizon's ownership would have made their service better but what you describe sounds like they are having a problem. It would be interesting to find out whether it is Verizon or FTC.
Farmer's Telephone Cooperative has humble roots and provides service on the east side of Sumter going out to the coast. They do a remarkably good job with voice and data and even built a wireless network that works pretty well.
Find a phone where the problem you describe is happening and then call their problem number (or repair) and describe the issue. I bet this problem belongs to a routing table in a Verizon switching office. |
