Post subject: Need help with 2 Router Setup
need help. I have a Netgear WGR614 wireless router (with my main PC, a second PC wireless connection, and A RepayTV unit wired. )
Vonage
sent me a Linksys RT31P2 router. I now have my setup like this:
Cable modem->Linksys->Netgear->PCs
Here is my problem:
I do A LOT of torrent downloads. Before I put the
Vonage
Linksys in the setup, I was getting super fast download speeds. Now I am lucky if I get above 25 kB/s.
How can I get my Netgear wireless router (which has port forwarding set up for torrent downloads) to pass through the Linksys with no restrictions?
Also, when I test my BT client, I get a NAT error. This never used to happen when I had the setup: Modem --> Router -->
Vonage
& Computers. I had Choppy audio, so I rewired it to the "recommended" configuration. Now, I have problems with my BT client. Can anyone give me some insight into what configuration I need to use on both routers? I've enabled Port Forwarding on both. On the IP address of the computer that does the most BT....and on all 3 addresses of the
Vonage
router.

Vonage
routers do not do well with BitTorrent.
Put the
Vonage
router behind the NetGear, it does not need any ports forwarded, only open ports, and usually that will work as long as you have not specifically forwarded ports 10,000 - 20,000 to any other device on the network. It also needs open ports 69, 80, 123, and sometimes 5060 and 5061. There is NO need to forward anything.

No, port triggering basically says "if the local computer opens port x to the Internet, forward a port to that computer."
"Open" just means the port is not manually forwarded to another computer, or blocked from being accessed.

Ok then.....I have no idea how to "open" a port. I've forwarded ports, before....but never OPENED any.

Sorry, I'm not being clear.
By default, all ports on a router are "open", in that any client may connect out, and invite return connections, on any port they choose. On a regular router, you must take action to "close" ports, but there should be no specific action required to "open" one.
So in almost all cases, all you need to do is put the
Vonage
router behind another one, relegate it to a
Vonage
device only, configure QoS to give the
Vonage
device priority (if your router has QoS capability), and enjoy.

THAT'S my issue. It's behind my Netgear router, wich does NOT have QoS. I am trying to find some way to ehnance the operation of my
Vonage
, however, I can't use the QoS. Is there anything I can do to enhance my
Vonage
Service?
I was thinking of purchasing the Linksys
Vonage
router. Would it be a good move, or not?

None of the
Vonage
routers can handle P2P/BitTorrent, and they aren't particularly good at QoS either. I'd stick with using anything
Vonage
supplies as a
Vonage
device only if you use P2P.
Personally, I use a WRT54GL, with aftermarket firmware, and it works very well for me using P2P and
Vonage
at the same time.
