Hi dingloo,

I was using Vonage in the US and decided to bring along my adapter to India to see if it works here. I tried to set it up at my parents home where they have cable-modem. The Vonage adapter is a Motorola VT1005V.

The setup process states that the Vonage adapter will configure itself automatically by indicating progress by the number of blinks of the green light. in my case, it remains stuck at the point where it is trying to obtain the IP address from the Cable Modem.

We are using Hathaway and this is located in Mumbai. Does anyone know what's going on? I don't ever get to the point where I see a steady green light indicating that it is ready for use.

Thanks,
guru

I have 'heard' of people who have successfully connected using Vonage in several locations using various providers such as:
Hathway
BSNL
Tata Indicom
Airtel

I have 'heard' of people doing it in Chennai and in Hyderabad.

The key is that it is different for each provider but the logic is common based on the type of the adaptor.

So if any one is having problems, please post the specific adaptor device model and your ISP name, I can help you out.

Regards,
Dingloo

The cable modem might be holding onto the computer's MAC address, and therefore refusing to talk to the Vonage device. Try leaving the cable modem unplugged for several minutes, then connect it to the Vonage box to see if it recognizes the new device.

If that doesn't work, see if the VT1005V is able to clone your computer's MAC address.

Thanks Paul! I have tried leaving the the cable modem unplugged and re-hooking everything but that doen not work.

How do I get the VT 1005V to clone the computer's MAC address?

Here's what I infer from the manual:

http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/VT1000/downloads/VT1000_User_Guide.pdf

Put your computer's MAC address into the "MAC Address Override" section under Advanced Configuration.

To get your PC's MAC address, go to the command line (start->run->cmd) and type "ipconfig /all". Your MAC is the 12-digit Physical Address, arranged in 6 groups of 2.

Hi guys:

I purchased a Linksys PAP2 adapter from Best Buy USA and activated here using my Comcast modem which has an ip address 24.XX.XX.XX.

I sent to India - Madurai and they tried to connect it directly to the modem using Airtel broadband.

They did not hear any indication on the phone.

When I asked them to check the ip address of the PAP2 using **** and 110# its still displaying the comcast ip address.

After resetting the modem, we checked the ip address.

Again it is displaying the same old comcast USA ip address.

It is not picking up the new ip address from the Airtel india modem which is in India madurai.

Can any one help me in this issue.

I will be very thankful for them.

Thanks.

With Regards

Bala

I don't have a PAP2, but it sounds like yours has the IP set to static. It shouldn't remember the old Comcast IP unless it was set to static. You need to access the PAP2's configuration screen from your web browser and change it's IP to Dynamic (DHCP), save changes, and it should acquire a new IP from the provider in India.

Dear John and Vonage TPA:

In india they are using dynamic ip address.

They are connecting the modem with an ADSL splitter.

In USA I configured previously just using the dynamic ip address provided for comcast residential services.

When i pluged in with the usa monitor it worked fine and I too do not had any problem in configuration.

I suspect that the modem in india is not giving up the default gateway or subnet address.

Please help me further to investigate and solve it.

Thanks

Bala

In the previous post, you said that the PAP2 is still showing the Comcast 24.x.x.x IP, correct? If so, it's running as static. When devices run as DHCP(dynamic), they will usually forget any prior IPs when they are turned off/disconnected from mains power.

If you could, please try the following:
Pick up the phone and press ****

then dial 101# Then choose 1 for Enable. You might need to push # again at this point. This should set DHCP to Enable, which tells the PAP2 to look for a new address every time it's powered up.

Just one last thing.. you said they're using an ADSL splitter. Are they using a real ADSL modem then internet signal to the PAP2 or is the PAP2 connected straight into the wall?

Our company has offices in India and China with employees traveling from our Atlanta office to India (Jaipur, Panipat, Delhi, Mumbai) and China (Shanghai & Beijing) multiple times each month. (gotta love those code share ff miles with DL BA LH and KLM!)

I've just ordered a ta and line (404 Atlanta number) and am sending it with someone next week to test. If it works out this will prove an inexpensive way for employees to keep in touch with their family while traveling (ditto for me).

I'll post the results, isp, etc after.

BTW, I've been a Vonage user since January and love it. I said goodbye to B*llSouth quite a while back have not regretted it at all.
