I have connected all the wires but am not able to get a dial tone. When I spoke with Vonage Tech support, they informed me that the Vonage Router cannot authenticate 2 things ie IP address AND user name/pwd. In other words, one has to be constant. Hence I need to buy an static IP address.

Any thoughts on the above? Has anyone installed Vonage using cable internet provider Powersurfer.net in Mumbai??Please help. In case you want to chat, please call me in Mumbai at 26336587.

There is no need for static ip.I have dynamic Ip and it works.
What is this username and password??
You need that to configure the router and not for anything else.

Router MAC address is the one tied to phone number.
Also I am not using Powersurfer.

My cable internet provider ie Powersurfer.net provides my cable and internet. They have given me a dynamic IP. I also need to enter my user name and pwd everytime before I can log into the internet. Hence, in my particular case, the Vonage wired Router RT31P2 has to authenticate both my IP address as well as my internet user name and pwd. The Vonage router is only able to authenticate one thing, thus the problem and my having to purchase a static IP so that it remains constant.

Hope this makes sense. What is your setup in Mumbai?

I don't think Vonage will authentiicate ip but router's MAC address.
I don't see what Vonage has to do with your username/password access to your broadband provider.

I have similar situation like you dynamic ip and broadband access.
I don't want Vonage to know my username and password access to my ISP. It is none of their business...

I am not based in India.

I have Static IP address set in my computer, when i am trying to configure my router to that Static ip, i am not able to configure.

Is anyone installed Vonage using Sify cable internet provider ??Please help.

How to check whether my cable provider has blocked my Voip port or not.

I have a coworker who hails from the Deli area. He went to Vonage about 18-months ago and took his with him when he went home for three weeks in January '04. He found it worked great with his parent's cable modem (don't know the ISP, sorry), enough to prompt him to purchase a second line (with second ATA) and leave his with his parents.

He pays the basic rate on his parents line and has found that he saves nearly $100/mo. that he had been spending on regular LD charges (since Vonage-to-Vonage calls are free), plus what they saved in reverse...

So to answer the original question in the tread--it works if the ISP can doesn't block the ports...

I don't think you can set the IP to static address unless ISP provides one. Check your internet provider for the ip setting to static or dynamic. Also ask about blocked ports.

Please type the foll in DOS prompt:

tftp tftp.vonage.net get test

If your result is "Transfer successful", then the Voip port has NOT been blocked by your ISP.

heh, that is a good test and can be a good indicator, but has nothing to do with a "voip port" (not that there's such thing) but it's entirely possible to have a working Voip service with tftp (which btw, is port 69) blocked.
in comparison, the default Vonage ports are 5060 – 5061 and 10000 – 20000.

Is there any way of checking if Vonage ports are being blocked by powersurfer.net located in Mumbai?

www.testyourvoip.com

For all intents and purposes this site will initiate a real SIP call from your computer to one of the destination sites that you choose. As best as I can tell it will use real UDP SIP packets for call initiation and RTP packets to "talk".

If this test works from your computer through your ISP then I would have to believe that there is hope.

You can sniff packets while the test is running to get a feel for what is happening.
