Post subject: Phone Started work good - John's Advice made it work
Hi Guys:
The problem was with the DSL router, AirTel people did not set the PPoE module. As by the advise from John, I studied about setting PPoE and asked them to do the same over conference.
Now everything is working fine (Quality is great than the local carrier).
Jonn thank you very much for the perfect advice.
If any body have problem on AirTel+PAP2+India combination please get advise from Mr. JOHN (Reebok) or me.

Post subject: Installing PAP2 in India
Hi Folks,
I need help in installing Linksys PAP2 (service from Vonage) in India. My ISP is BSNL (DSL modem).
I had tested this in US before sending it to India.
Problem is they are not getting a dial tone.
Please help!
- Dude is cool.

Have they run a test from testyourvoip.com from the account there?

Steve48,
Thanks for the information. I will inform them about testyourvoip.com.
We are connecting PAP2 directly from the DSL modem.
Is it true that DSL modem should be on PPPoE and not DHCP for Voip to work? Also not sure whether they are on DHCP or PPPoE, need to confirm.

You'll need more expert help than mine for the DSL questions. Also, take a look at recent threads. I've seen reports that the PAP-2 won't work when plugged directly into a modem, but I can't confirm that.

The settings depend entirely upon your internet provider. The PAP2 adapter doesn't know how to do PPPoE on its own (at least that I'm aware of), so you would have to install a router between it. Ideally, the DSL modem can handle the PPPoE on its own.

Guys,
It worked for us.
All I had to do was change the setting of DSL modem (ISP: BSNL, India) from DHCP to PPPoE. Then I had to manually configure IP, Gateway and Subnet on PAP2. You can find this in the PAP2 manual.
Currently the quality is very good on a 256 Kbps.
Also I have connected PAP2 directly to the DSL modem, no router in between.
Thanks for all your inputs.

You would probably do better by having your folks check with friends and neighbors who have broadband and are willing to help. Have them run tests at
www.testyourvoip.com
and see how VoIP works with their ISPs. They'll also want to check legality issues.
