I'm planning on consolidating my current LAN and need some recommendations on hardware and setup.

Current layout:

Click - pops to larger version. On free hosting site - might disappear at some point.

Ideal layout:

Current firewall / router is a linux pc running Astaro software. Three interfaces - LAN, WAN, and DMZ. Supports QoS very nicely. Looking to drop the DMZ completely, consolidate down to one piece of hardware for router and phone adapter (remove the linux box completely, remove the PAP2 completely).

I am looking for recommendations for what piece of hardware to put in. I'm not seeing too much about the VT 2442 for obvious reasons. It doesn't HAVE to be a wireless router as well (Linksys WRT54GL). I'd rather it be separate, especially if I can't find a WRT54GL v4 or less (to run DD-WRT).

A solid QoS is a must have. My Vonage service was really choppy before without it.

Also, what steps are necessary once I have the pieces in place? I'm assuming I have to contact Vonage tech support to provision the new piece?

The WRT54GL is a Linux-based unit, you don't need to find a V4 or earlier, since by definition all WRT54GL units are WRT54G V4 units.

DD-WRT or HyperWRT will both run on any model of the WRT54GL just fine.

You can keep the PAP2 unless you are dead set against it. IMHO it is better to keep a separate adapter and cordless phone, but that's your call. If you want the VT phone, you have to buy it and just call Vonage and have them transfer the MAC address from your PAP2 over to the VT phone.

Here is a guide more tuned to a WRTP54G/RTP300 (actual Vonage routers) and a WRT54GL running HyperWRT Thibor, but the basic setup is the same, only the screens will differ:

Ok, I figured out part of my problem. Was getting mixed up with the WRT54G, WRT54GL, WRT54GS, (and event the WRTSL54G) and the various versions of each. DD-WRT supported devices

I was hoping to keep my Linksys WAP and just find a wired router to replace my Linux box. Seems that the forum favors the WRT54GL pretty heavily. I might just use that and turn off the wireless.

Thanks for your quick response.

Another forum favorite, though I have no personal experience with it, is the Hawking HBB1 Voip optimization device, or any of the routers based on the same StreamEngine chipset. Supposedly, this provides an out-of-the-box QoS experience that works well with Vonage, though how it is accurately calculating upstream is still a bit of a mystery to me.

I have never used one, and can't say how they work, but several people on the forum speak highly of them.

I had a thread here talking about my experience.

In short, I bout the D-Link product DI-102 which runs the same system as the Hawking device.

The DI-102 seems to work great so far and I would recommend it as an easy and effective solution to the QoS problem.

Tests results at www.testmyvoip.com

Before DI-102 nothing running - 3.7

After DI-102 nothing running - 4.4

After DI-102 uTorrent and 3 torrents seeding - 3.7-4.0 and no breakups reported by the person I was talking to.
