I've had Vonage since Nov of 2004 and up to now I always get the same problems. Whenever I'm using Vonage my calls get dropped. I hear a tick, another thick then dial tone. This has been going on since day one. I'm to the point where I don't even use the phone if I'm gonna make an important call or talk at lenght. It is so unrealiable that I use less than an 100 min a month on the phone and I have the unlimited package.
I remember calling Vonage once and ask about the problem and the tech guy said it's because of my setup. My setup is as follows:
TWC Roadrunner modem is connected to Linksys 2.4 GHZ wireless router and Vonage modem connected to Wireless router. My phone is a Vtech 2.4 GHZ
The guy at Vonage said the reason why my calls got dropped is because the wireless router and phone are using the same Frequency so I should get another wireless phone on a different frequency or use a corded phone.
This weekend I was searching my closet and I found a corded phone so I plugged it into my Vonage modem and called someone and the same thing happend. While I was talking the phone tick, tick then goes blank then dial tone comes back.
At this point I don't know what to do, I've had Vonage so long and I'm not someone who complains alot but EVERY single one of my calls get dropped. I'm being tempted to jump back to Verizon with their new $29.99 plan.
Is there something else I can do with my setup that may help.. what? |

I would first eliminate Vonage and any other non-essential device from the picture. Disconnect all your equipment except cable modem and PC. Hook a direct connection between the cable modem and PC and run PingPlotter. Ping the TWC Roadrunner homepage, set the interval to 2.5 seconds, and let it run unlimited.
This will monitor your line and keep historical data. If a red vertical line appears in the bottom graph many times per day/hour/whatever, then the problem is your ISP. If it runs and you never get a red vertical line, it means that there are no outages with your ISP and it's probably a Vonage issue.
Have you requested or have they offered you a new Vonage device?

Try to change n/w set up as follows:
connect TWC Roadrunner modem to Vtech 2.4 GHZ to Linksys 2.4 GHZ wireless router ie, MODEM-->VTECH IP-->LINKSYS WIRELESS RT-->PC |

thanks.. trying to see if I can download that ping thing. I called Vonage awhile back and the guy was going over a whole bunch of stuff with me but he came to the conclusion that my phone and my wireless router were messing with each other. Since that time I just let things go because I would just use my cellphone if I wanted to make a call. I'm not joking but my service is so unreliable that I go days without using the phone. I probably will try another Voip service and see if I'm getting the same problem.
Since I got Vonage I've only had the one modem they sent me and it's been giving me the same problems. EVERY SINGLE call I'm on gets dropped. |

If this has been happening since day 1, you're a good candidate for a new Vonage router. I'm on my 3rd (VT1000 -> RTP31P2 -> RTP300). The VT1000 kept dropping sync and the RT31P2 had an awful hiss in the background. The RTP300 has been pretty good.
