PostPosted: Sun Apr 23, 2006 5:07 pm    Post subject: Want alternative to Linksys router Reply with quote Back to top

Folks,

We're Vonage customers for 1 year, overall satisfied *but* for the router. First one died in 2 wks, got it replaced after substantial headache. Second one was behaving fine... till today ! Moved some wires around, router stopped working, tried the usual reboot steps, went back to install CD, after a certain point it says router cannot connect to internet -- swapped cables turned everything off and then on, to no avail.

Are there alternative routers I can use besides this hot-running low-reliability Linksys unit ? (We have the RT31P2).

Or is it time to find another Voip provider ?

Thanks,

-drmwr-

Most of the devices that Vonage provides in order to have service are Linksys devices.

I believe there used to be a Motorola device, but I don't know if it is still available or not.

Here is a link to the devices that are listed on Vonage's site. I can't say for sure if they are all available today, but this should give you an idea.

http://www.vonage.com/help.php?category=38&nav=5

I also have a RT31P2, but I have not had any problems with it and we've been using it since 11/2004. From reading this forum, people do seem to like the WRTP54G which is the phone router that also give wireless for your network.

bummer ur router isnt working. i have the rpt300, and i really like it. besides some caller id issues, it is a sweet thing. Mostly because it has really cool blue lights. But if u want to get away from linksys, there is a Motorola VT2442 on vonage.com. Or you can get it at target for like $60.

Thanks for both replies ! I'd like to get hold of the Motorola VT2442, but it doesn't appear to be for sale anywhere I could find ? I did find Vonage offering it for new subscribers, but when I tried to email Vonage to find out how an existing subscriber could get one, the screen came up with a message "we are unable to accept email at this time" Give me a break @$#% !!! What's with this ?

Well I'll keep trying.

Thanks

...OK, continuing the saga...

I went to Target and bought the device, turns out to be a VT1005 not a VT2442, but that's OK, enough functionality for my simple needs. For some reason out of the box it would not configure beyond the stage "Finding Network Address" (LED flashing twice). So I asked Vonage what is my registered MAC address, and went in to the VT1005 via the Web browser port and set it. Eventually I got it to where the VT1005 is set to the old MAC address, and it is completely booted up (LED on steady) and my PC internet connection is alive and well.

Still no dial tone.

So I'm on the phone with Vonage tech support while I write this, they report that they are getting an error from their end. Let's hope we get this resolved...

I don't think "spoofing" the MAC address on the unit is going to help. What you want to do is have Vonage switch your account over to the new MAC address of your VT1005.

Vonage has some way of seeing the "real" MAC address of the unit, or uses something else entirely to identify the units on their network. Whatever they use, it sees right through any "Cloned" or spoofed MAC addresses entered under the "MAC Address Clone" screen.

Thanks for your reply. Indeed my experience is consistent with what you said. Vonage asked for and was able to find my VT1005 with the factory MAC address but were not able to change it. I think their software may have been confused by the spoofed address which they think is a Linksys model. They have actually asked me to swap it at Target for another device, but I might give a shot at resetting the factory MAC address at home first.

If they were not able to change it, then they don't know what they were trying to do, or somehow the message got garbled.

They don't need to make any changes to your VT unit, they need to change your Vonage account on their databases to reflect the new MAC address on the VT unit, to switch your account from the old device you had over to the VT.

OK, my Vonage phone is working once again. Phew !

The fifth person (at customer care, not tech support) I spoke with at Vonage had the tenacity, perseverance and depth of knowledge - he was able to get the problem solved.

My impression is that there is some software limitation of the standard way the Vonage staff does MAC reassignment, that the previous support folks were getting a system error at their end. But the fifth person was able to try other methods to do the reassignment and then verified over the network that the device was correctly programmed.

I was at work while this was happening, so I tried calling home on my cell phone -- and it wasn't working (no ringing). But a couple minutes later while I was still on the phone with Vonage -- they got a confirmation message from my device, and after that the device is working both inbound and out.

What I can say is that despite my frustrations today, there are enough good people at the Vonage service center to take charge and solve problems.

Thanks to all for your interest and help.
