i have connected and configured dsl modem (huawei from bsnl) to rtp and comp to rtp. and the internet is working good with this set up. the problem here is the phone line. the light blinks rhythmically (does it indicate anything?????) irrespective of the phone being connected. and no dial tone at all. i don't know whether its a problem with fire wall of the huawei or BSNL blocks the Voip port. plz help me on this. thanks

Please post the technical details listed in the sticky post at the top of the forum. Typically a blinking phone light on an RTP300 indicates that your phone is off the hook or that you have phone mail. Does it do this if your phone is unplugged from the Vonage unit? Are you connected to house wiring?

i have configured the dsl modem as per the instruction by the ISP (pppoe, user name and pwrd, and also kept the dhcp server ON with a range of IP address) then gave a static IP and gateway to my rtp pointing to the dsl modem. and similarly configured my comp to a static ip and gateway pointing to rtp. this made the internet work. but the phone is not working (no dial tone) the phone light blinks rhythmically, thatz it. irrespective of phone jack connected or not. i am connected to house wiring and the internet speed also is great.

thanks for your reply

if you run www.testyourvoip.com, it will tell you whether your Voip is being blocked or not. that will give us a place to start. So connect your computer directly to your modem and run it. Be sure to remove the rtp out of your network for the test. testyourvoip does not use your Vonage adapter.

tried that, when i selected "Preserve Speech Quality" i got 1.6 to 2 and "Conserve Bandwidth" gave me 4. what does that mean...? lower bandwidth i get good result and higher almost no result...??

also i did the test by typing the foll in cmd prompt:

tftp tftp.vonage.net get test

and got the result as "Transfer successful:5 bytes in one sec, 5bytes/sec" this shows Voip port is not blocked?????

my understanding of the test is that if you select "Preserve Speech Quality" it runs the test using a higher bandwidth. In your case, the higher bandwidth made your test result unreliable for Voip. The second setting, "Conserve Bandwidth" uses a lower quality voice setting which permits the adapter to conserve its use of bandwidth, i.e. less data is transmitted per second hence less likely to lose the data.

Your test results show that your Voip is not being blocked which is a good start.

I encourage others to chime in.

Can you give us more details on your modem? is it simply a modem or also a router? also, when you use your computer for the internet, does it log into the dsl account for you?

dsl accounts are more tricky because of the need to sign in. If the signing process is done purely through the modem, then you need to set your rtp to obtain ip address automatically not to use ppoe.

what is the current set up for your rtp? Is it set to obtain an ip address automatically?

by the way, I'd strongly recommend that you use the 30kbps bandwidth setting since your dsl connection does not appear to be a very high bandwidth account.

I'm concerned about that blinking phone light- it's not normal. Please disconnect your adapter phone jacks from everything- house wiring and phones. Does the blinking stop?

I think it’s a router (HUAWEI Model: WA1003A) its got a wi-fi. I can connect a laptop and a comp. and the connection is 256kbps broadband connection from BSNL.

One more thing I could do is set the dsl modem to assign dynamic IP (set the comp to get a ip automatically) when connected only to dsl. Then also made the rtp when connected in loop to assign ip automatically to the comp.( gave a static ip to rtp pointing to dsl) this again made the internet work fine. But not the phone.

I will check out setting rtp to obtain an ip address automatically and will come back. (i guess i checked it out with same result)

Answering steve’s question, i will get back after checking

anyway thanks guys for your replies
