PostPosted: Sat Apr 22, 2006 12:42 pm    Post subject: Verizon FIOS, RT31P2 and Voice QoS solution Reply with quote Back to top

QoS with RT31P2 fixed my FIOS problem.

1. Your location
West Chester, PA
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
Verizon FIOS
3. Upload and download speeds
Up = 1780
DN = 14550
When no phone traffic.
4. Modem make and model
PPPoE internet connection
5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2
RT31P2 Firmware version = 1.30.00
6. Setup of Network - Initial setup, see more... below
Code:

                        |-->Cabled PC
  FIOS--->DLink DI-624--|
                        |-->Cabled RT31P2
                        |-->Wireless laptop

DI-624 is dynamically assigning IPs in range 100 thru 105.

7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc:
Just installed FIOS this week, had cable. Having problems with calls
during high network traffic (running VPN, Remote desktop at work, or speed test).

When I run the speed test and make a call the I experience the following problems.
*Fast busy signal after getting dial tone and making call
*When someone is using phone, occasionally blocks access to Internet
*Incoming calls are bounced to secondary line (cell phone)
*Incoming calls get busy signal

Voice quality is excellent when working.

8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston.
My score = 4.4

9. Interestingly there is more... I removed the DLink router out of the picture and configured the RT31P2 for PPPoE.
Code:
FIOS--->RT31P2--->PC

I make a phone call and then start the speakeasy speed test to generate some traffic. The download test drops to 11614 and voice quality is still good. Speakeasy freezes when trying to run the upload test. I hang up the phone and the speed test finishes. Upload bandwidth seems to be consumed by the RT31P2. Is there a way to throttle the RT31P2? I went to the Vonage web site and reset the bandwidth to 50kbps. Did not help.

Solution:
I read a Forum posting that talked about QoS on the RT31P2. I found the setting in the configuration page Applications and Gaming Tab. The default Voice QOS was 512 kbps. Ah ha. I set Voice QoS upload to 128. Boy, that changed the speakeasy test. I shutdown all hardware. Reconfigured all hardware per Dlink diagram above and reran speakeasy speed test with phone call. Worked great! Problem fixed.
Thanks to all that posted.

I've searched in vain for this post "that talked about QoS on the RT31P2". Can you please post link of that discussion or elaborate on how you can set the settinga in the configuration page of Applications and Gaming Tab ? I've looked at this same page on my D-Link router but found nothing about "Voice QOS". And or how to set this QOS thing.

I also have Verizon FIOS and Vonage and my proble is sometimes I get choppy calls, drop calls, can't hear person talking problem when making long distance calls to Brazil. Local calls are fine. So I'm trying to find solution to improve voice quality. My FIOS is 15 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up. Thanks.

I believe he is speaking about setting it on the RT31P2, not the Dlink.

I also have a RT31P2 and their is a QoS setting on this Vonage Device on the Applications & Gaming - QoS tab.

I'm a little surprised that this would help since the QoS is usually supposed to be set on the main router (which in your case is the D-Link) but regardless this is what they are referring to.
