Now the verbose experience.
I emailed support. Got a reply 1/2 hr later. Msg may have shown up earlier, but that's when I checked.
Excerpt from email from services at
Vonage
The 1 blink sequence on the Motorola MTA/VT1005 indicates that the device is unable to get the IP address from the server. In order to troubleshoot the issue, we recommend you to ensure the following:
1.Ensure that you are using the correct power adapter model(ADP-15ZB & 12VDC, 1.25A)
2.Connect the power adapter to a different wall outlet and check for
status of the power LED.
3.Please confirm the WAN MAC Address of the device.
Emailed back. confirming the adaptor. Asking how to determine the mac adr.
Prompt reply back from

Plugged into another outlet with same problem. Emailed them back telling them that and the mac adr.
Called them mentioning ticket number. Talked to a tech support guy who decided to hand over to senior tech support guy after we tried a few things.
After going thru the "easy installation with multiple computers " again the senior guy tech support asked that I surf out and thus have the router connected directly to my cable modem. He then said to connect my adaptor to my router and see if he could see it on his end. It immediately did 2, 3 and 4 blinks and then solid.
I was able to dial out on my phone
He mentioned he did not nothing on his end aside from watch the mac adr connect. He did no configuration work on his side.
Having the adaptor on the outside solved the problem as my router is able to allocate IP addresses.
The tech support guy has an idea why having the router on the outside fixed the problem and how the problem may have occurred. This new configuration actually gives me more flexibility as to where I can have my phone. Wish I knew about it sooner.
