I just bought and installed the WRT54GL according to Nat's guidelines. One question I have is do I have to configure both the Optimize Gaming Applications and the Device Priority. I do some P2P sharing and I don't know how to get my Specific Port #. Also, my download speeds are really fast, but my upload speeds are slow now.

My second question is there really any difference between the Hawking device and the WRT54GL besides adjusting the upload speed manually. If the Hawking device does it automatically, I'm going to return the Linksys and get the Hawking.

The QoS guidelines may slow your upload speeds slightly (depending on your choice of manual upload). Here is something pretty close to my settings in Thibor:

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/thibor14qos.html

The best performance tweaks I have are:

1. Turn off (disable) flow control on the Ethernet ports.

2. Keep your configuration as simple as you can while accomplishing what you need.

If you are using P2P protocol encryption, the automatic QoS won't work, you'll need to use port number.

Nate,
Thanks for your help. However, I decided to return the linksys and decided to buy the Hawking Broadband Booster. Can you recommend a good router to use with the Hawking. I only have the LInksys 300RT connected to my DSL Model.

I'm looking for something with wireless capability that can handle a lot of p2p.
Thanks

Not sure. If the WRT54GL isn't working for you, I don't have any better ones. Wink

If I get the Hawking I don't need a router with QOS do I? I mean I don't have to adjust the router QOS because the Hawking device will do it for me right?

P.S. Should I leave the QOS on the Linksys RT300 on or should I turn it off with the Hawking device?

If you get the Hawking, you don't need the QoS, but the RTP300's connection table cannot handle P2P and it will occasionally "lock up". That's one of the reasons I recommend the WRT54GL, it has both working QoS and with the aftermarket firmware does really well at P2P, at least it does for me and a good number of people I have recommended it to here, and also for a lot of people at www.hyperwrt.org and www.linksysinfo.org

But, if you've tried using the configuration guide I published, and if's not working for you, then you'll need some form of solid, reliable router to put in front of the RTP300. You'll then want to relegate the RTP300 to Vonage duty only.

Alternatively, you can try clamping down your P2P usage (keep max simultaneous connections down around 50 or so, with only 5-10 half-open connections, and it should work reasonably well).

If you can find another router with the Hawking StreamEngine code, you may be able to upgrade to that.

Nate, thanks for all your advice.

I purchased the Hawkings, now when I download people can hear me, however, my end is choppy. I was wondering if it is because I'm just using the RTP300 without anything in front of it. It's not just when I use the P2P applications, its when I download from usenet groups also.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about download except throttle your individual applications - QoS does not work on download data.

Well if you have the wrt-54gl then you should not be using the stock firmware. That router was designed to run custom firmwares such as DD-WRT and Sveasoft. I highly recommend getting DD-WRT for that router. It's amazing. I have it on 3 different routers. Do a google search for DD-WRT and it'll take you to that page. I have the WRT-54GL and couldn't be happier since I have DD-WRT on it. QOS does work on Download with DD-WRT. It's a much better professional level firmware than the stock linksys crap.

mrmagic526 -

I agree with you on aftermarket firmware, and DD-WRT is good stuff. Another alternative, which is somewhat closer to the stock firmware though not quite as feature-packed, is HyperWRT Thibor.

http://www.thibor.co.uk/

I've been running one flavor or another of HyperWRT since October and it's been a real champ.

I've also heard many reports of good news from DD-WRT users, and the beauty is that both are free (although anyone who uses one should, of course, send a few bucks to the author if they can swing it).
