i DO NOT have to maintain a phone line for it, right? i can just go ahead and order Vonage phone service.

Yes, you can use Vonage with FIOS. My installer actually assumed I was using Vonage since I did not order a phone line.

I haven't hooked my Vonage adapter up to my FIOS connection yet but I did get a chance to run testyourvoip.com on the line and the scores were 4.4 (as good as it gets) up and down. I signed up for the slowest 5/1.5 FIOS option.

If you are going to get FIOS TV (coming to my area soon, please) then you will need to keep Verizon's wireless D-Link router in the loop, preferably physically close to the demarcation point. If you haven't gotten a Vonage device yet you might want to consider a simple phone adapter rather than a router. The disadvantage of not having prioritization is not likely to outweigh the simplicity of install. Alternatively you can configure a Vonage wireless router for use in another location if your demarcation point offers poor wireless reception (mine's in the basement) or you want a second router acting as a bridge in, for example, a home office.

Quick answer: Yes, you can hook up Vonage with FIOS.

I just got Verizon FAS internet service, as of March 30th. Before that, I had RCN for phone and cable modem. I didn't want to rely on a Voip phone line with my RCN service -- it was constantly dropping out, several time a day. So far, with FAS, not a single packet dropped, as best I can tell, and way fast (15.4 Mbps down, 1.8Mbps up).
I wasn't totally comfortable with no regular phone line; When I signed up for FAS, I was initially told that I needed a Verizon phone line before they could take the FAS order, which I found out later wasn't necessarily true. They will install FAS with no phone line, according to verizon folks I talked to after the phone order was already in place. I'm not unhappy, though, especially after today's Vonage network problems. I have Verizon for my main phone line, and Vonage for a second and third phone line for my business.

Hope that helps.

stupid spell-check changed all my FIOS to FAS !

I didn't mention I'm using Linksys PAP2 phone adapter, which I got from Sam's Club for $40 (with $40 service voucher). I already had a Linksys WRT54G wireless router, which I like better than the D-Link Wireless Router that Verizon brought.

I was wondering what FAS was. Next time that happens you can edit your post. There should be an edit button your your posts in the upper right corner.
