Ok, I fiddled with it some more...

Here is where I am at. I can get my computer and telephone to work now at the same time with both plugged into the DLink. I managed to disable MAC address cloning on my LinkSys.

Here is my latest results. Tell me if this is good or not.

What am I looking for in these results to tell me if it is good or not?

I attempted to download MS SP2 (massive file) from here:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/winxpsp2relcaddownload.html

It downloaded at about 2000KB/s. I dialed 1-800-GERMANY and I got a download speed of about 1800KB/s.

Do you think that my speed is acceptable? I did hear some clicking sounds when I was listening to the 800 number...

I also tried this speed test:
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

and I get 15140Kbps DOWNLOAD and 1319 Kbps UPLOAD.

When I am talking on the phone my speed is reduced to: 15045Kbps down, and 1292 up.

Is this a problem?

First, those testyourvoip.com results are so beautiful, you should print them out and put them in a golden frame. Those are the very image of what perfect Voip results should be. Stop fiddling with it, because you're not going to be able to improve on what is already darned near perfect.

Second, I don't know why your download is slower than your upload, that'd be a question for the FiOS folks, but your numbers are reducing by less than what Vonage takes up, so I'd say you are in good shape.

Keep in mind that, if you run a massive download while you are on the Vonage line, you probably will hear imperfections, assuming you are using up all your bandwidth on the download. there's not a lot you can do about it. The good news is that with all the bandwidth you have, you'll really need to be cookin' even to NOTICE voice issues, much less have them be a problem.

I think you're in pretty good shape for Voip.

The one nitpick I have about your connection is that you should have better download speed - I get better than 1319kbps on my primitive Cable connection. It might be worth contacting your ISP and asking about that.

PS: Important, if subtle, distinction. "Kbps" means "Kilobytes per second". "kbps" means KiloBITS. There are eight bits in a byte. So, when you capitalize the "K", you are actually overstating your speeds by a factor of 8. Internet speeds are almost invariably measured in Kilobits ("kbps").

Glad to hear the MAC address thing worked out. Now, about that beer... Wink

nate,

I am sure glad to hear that I have good stats for Voip! Thanks for helping me out with this.

When I said Kbps I think it is Bytes because you know how when you download a large file from the web and you get the status bar thing, it is in bytes. It would make sense since 2000KBps * 8 = 16Mbps upload, and which is pretty much what I am paying for (15M down, 2M upload). Smile

I also see that I had mistyped something. I should have said:
and I get 15140Kbps DOWNLOAD and 1319 Kbps UPLOAD.

Oh, and that beer....

Hmmmm....

It's too early in the morning for beer, but here you go...

And if you want more,,, then here you go! Smile

Smile

Nate,

What sorts of things do you look for in those detailed results? What makes my connection "so good"?

Then you are in good shape. Upload is almost always lower than download, and that upload ain't nothing to complain about! (I have 256k on my connection, for example).

You take that back! It's always lunchtime, somewhere. Wink (grin)

Though, to be honest, I've had some stomach problems for the last few days, so even beer isn't appealing. Living on oatmeal and green tea isn't a lot of fun, but "liquid bread" would probably kill me right about now.

Well, the first thing is the MOS scores. 4.4 is the best you can get. You got a 4.4. Wink

If your score is below about 3.8 or so, then you will probably start noticing call problems. Even above 3.8, you can notice problems, but your calls will probably be near landline quality.

The other things to look out for are packet loss and packet discards:

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/packetloss.html

There are a number of factors other than simply not enough bandwidth that can make a Voip call work poorly. Testyourvoip tests the complete call, not just the bandwidth.

Someday, I'll take a set of Testyourvoip results and type up an article with a field-by-field analysis of what that means for Vonage users. Wink

Hahahahhaha

"Liquid Bread!" That's how I think of it too! Smile

Regarding the quality of my phone. Honestly I have to say that my old "land line" was almost as good quality as this new Vonage thing that I've got going. Realy, I am very pleased with it; especially now that I can use my computer and my wife can talk on the phone at the same time! It was a bit nutty there for about a month or so. Smile

Thanks for all the help here. I am quite impressed.

Far more important than the MOS score, or the kbps rating, or the lost or discarded packet ratings, there is the WAF. The WAF is THE factor by which all other factors are judged.

WAF = Wife Acceptance Factor.

(grin)
