PostPosted: Mon Apr 17, 2006 12:02 pm    Post subject: Line 2 No Dial Tone - Pap2 Line 1 OK Reply with quote Back to top

Hi Folks,

I have been a Vonage customer for I'm guessing about a year now. There have been some bumps in the road, but with the Voip technology being new and with my cell phone and the awesome low pricing model, I'm happy.

Here is a new problem that I can't seem to solve:

I have a Linksys PAP2 adapter and a Netgear WGT624 version 2 wireless router and a cable modem. All has been working fine with the exception of the occasional no dial tone on both lines, probably about once a week on average. That problem is fixable by just unplugging the PAP2 power in my case for about 5 seconds and then plugging it back and all is well.

Well, all of a sudden I have no dial tone on line 2. I can take the phoneline from the phone that works on Line 1 and plug it into the PAP2 line 2 and still no dial tone. So it is not a problem with the phone or wiring on line 2, it is in the PAP2 somewhere or the server. I contacted tech support and the gentleman gave me the standard stuff, you know, reset blah blah blah.

I have tried resetting everything and still no help. Has anyone had this problem and found a resolution? I wonder if the PAP2 has gone bad, or if a setting on the Vonage server has changed. I'm really not sure what the case may be.

In order to send a fax now, I have to swap the telephone lines.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Sal Crocker
Memphis, TN.

Do you have two sperate phone line services? If not, then line 2 will not have dial tone unless you are paying for two Vonage lines or fax line service

Thanks Taylor for the input, but as I posted that is part of the confusion. I do have and pay for 2 phone lines, both of which have been working just fine for the entire time with the exception of the occasional no dial tone.

Now out of nowhere my line 2 does not work. For the sake of clarity I will be a bit redundant. It is not the fax machine. I can take the phone which is on line 1, (the line that works) and plug it into the Phone Adapter's Line 2 port, and boom no dial tone.
Then, I can take that same phone and plug it back into the Phone Adapter's Line 1 port, and boom dial tone. This should be pretty clear by now.

despite the redundancy, you haven't mentioned the simple fact of whether the light for phone 2 is lit or not.
also, do you still show both lines under your vonage.com account? what happens when you try calling the 'dead' line?

Ok:

1) Vonage shows both accounts (No history on line 2 obviously)
2) All four blue lights are on
3) When dialing line 2 it just rings

Good troubleshooting tips, but ops normal in those regards.

Any more ideas?

Thanks,
Sal

if both lines are lit up, and you aren't getting any dialtone or other indication the line is working, my guess is that the port somehow died. I don't think I've ever heard of having the phone light lit but no dialtone, pretty strange.

my RT31P2 did that once, all of a sudden, Line 1 didn't work anymore, the light was lit, and logging into the router showed hte acct as active on line 1, but not working..

i called, and had them switch the acct to line2 and it works again..

now, I'm pretty sure that my problem was caused by bad grounding on my house wiring, and a lighting storm the night before, there are hydro transmission llines outside my house, in my front yard, and we're on the very top of a hill.. the lighting wire gets a good workout... this was the first electronics failure i've had caused by it tho.. Smile

my guess is, it's your ATA gone for a crapper...

That is very interesting.

Just a couple of days ago, we had severe weather move through the Memphis area and my neighbors tree was struck by lightning while I was outside. Pretty scary experience for me. Becuase I wasn't inside, I don't know if we had a power surge, but it's possible. It seems that if there was damage, the blue light would not be on. But, you can never know with certainty I guess about the internal circuitry's health based on just those lights.

Maybe it's time to ask for another phone adapter. Can you purchase these locally? Is there a better adapter than the Linksys PAP2.

That PAP2 at it's best was never an angel. I would have to reset it on average about once every week, due to both lines loosing dial tones and their associated line 1 & 2 blue lights. I still don't know why that was happening. Vonage said that it is a very sensitive system, something about packet loss. I don't know a whole lot about how this stuff works. But, I do know that with a wireless router, cable modem, range extender and phone adapter, that there is a lot of stuff in the chain.

Do you folks think I should ask for a new PAP2 or continue troubleshooting? I think maybe it's time for a new phone adapter.

Thanks again for the help.
