PostPosted: Sat Apr 15, 2006 2:21 pm    Post subject: Setting up LinkSYS 300 router with our satellite internet??? Reply with quote Back to top

I've been emailing ALL day with customer service and they don't actually read your email and answer your questions. All I get are form letters that don't help.

I don't even know if I have it wired right. We don't have a modem box anywhere in our house. I have a cable that comes through the wall that plugs directly into our computer. I plugged that into our router (Linksys 300--came free with the service). I have the yellow cord plugged from the Ethernet port in the router and then plugged into our computer. Is that right? I can't get anyone to tell me.

Next. When I do that and follow all the directions for the order of turning everything on, I can't get online. Something is wrong. I follow their directions for checking the IP address. It stills doesn't get me online. They gave me more directions but the password they gave me to get into the system doesn't work. I asked for a new one and they sent me another form letter.

CAN SOMEONE AT LEAST TELL ME IF I PLUGGED THIS IN RIGHT? I don't see anything that doesn't use some modem box to plug things into.

HELP PLEASE!!! I'm ready to cancel before I even begin with this thing!

If you're referring to the RTP300 as your Vonage router, and if you have direct internet service via ethernet from a wall jack, then you should have a cable from that wall jack to the internet port on the RTP300 (it's blue on mine). Another cord should run from any of the four ethernet ports on the RTP300 (yellow on mine) to the ethernet port on your computer. That sounds like what you described.

If you continue to have problems, post the details listed in the sticky post at the top of the forum. In particular, tell us more about this internet service you have. It may require some special addressing.

You want to run Voip over a satellite internet connection??

Run this test and tell us your "round trip time".

download time was 750, upload 103

I dont' think it's the satellite I'm having problems with. I'm not using the blue cord because there is no wall jack. This cable just comes in through a hole in the wall and I'm plugging that into the router.

It's not the speed. I just don't have any internet connection when I have it hooked up.

I didn't think it was your problem, I'm just predicting that the latency (the third number in the test, the one you left off) will be pretty high and may make your Vonage experience dissatisfying.

there's nothing that says latency on the test, pause number was 400 something. Is that what you are talking about? Their website just talks about upload speed if it will work or not. We've already paid for 2 months and haven't gotten this even hooked up yet. We're overseas so everything is more complicated. We've could have chosen a different internet provider if we had known satellite would be a problem. Vonage makes it sound like it's not and now this is what we got. Our families are waiting impatiently for us to call though so until we get this hooked up they are going to be kept waiting. Anyone have any help to offer?

When you have the cable from the wall going to the router, and a cable from a LAN port on the router going to your PC, can you browse to 192.168.15.1? If not, your PC probably is not set up for DHCP. Go to a command prompt (Start-->Run: cmd) and type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes). Look for "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:" and then tell us what is listed for "IP Address". It should be in the 192.168.15.* range, but I'm guessing it's not. However, once we've verified that portion we can describe how to check to see if your PC is using DHCP or not.

Right above "Max Pause" and below "Quality of Service" you should see a number for "Round Trip Time."

Sounds like you have everything hooked up correctly. Its possible that your internet provider is looking for the MAC address of your PC, and won't recognize the router's MAC to connect. Try going into the router setup screens and clone the MAC address of your PC to the router and see if that makes a difference.
