I'm sure I'm not the only one trying to figure this out.....

Here's my current situation

- softphone working fine on pc
- bluetooth headset works fine also
- want to use a 'wireless' phone rather than headset so what are my options......?

- usb phone - works but is wired and keypad doesn't seems to work with softphone so have to be at the pc to dial and answer.
- wireless Voip phone - ie. UTStarcom. straight 802.11 connection without having to go through computer. Have not tried this yet - seems ideal solution BUT choices are limited and price is $200+. I think in 6 months prices and choices will be better.

While I wait for the wireless SIP phones to mature I wanted to use a bluetooth cellphone or blackberry rather than the headset to connect to the pc. Seems like this should be easy but I can't get it to work and don't see any one else trying. My blackberry sees the computer as a headset - it's upside down. Anyone tried this out?

Basically cellphone->bluetooth->pc->softphone.

I doubt you're ever going to get this to work.

The issue here is that Bluetooth devices which provide a service must implement and advertise these services using one of the pre-defined Bluetooth profiles. Headsets implement the Headset Profile (HSP), and advertise this during pairing.

Unfortunately, I know of no cell phones which advertise themselves as providing the HSP service. My Sony T610, for example, supports the following:

- OBEX File Transfer,
- Dial-up Networking,
- Voice gateway,
- Serial Port 1,
- Serial Port 2,
- OBEX Object Push,
- IrMC Synchronization,
- HF Voice gateway,
- OBEX Basic Imaging

Now conceptually it is possible for someone to develop a cell phone which advertises itself as providing HSP services, but why? How many people out there would really prefer to talk to people within 10m of their computers with a candy bar held against the side of their heads, instead of a hands-free headset?

I think a better solution for you would be a Bluetooth phone which supports Cordless Telephony Profile (CTP). This looks to be pretty cool -- in effect, it is a mechanism to replace the current mix of cordless phone standards using a single Bluetooth-based standard. The phone could detect a Bluetooth telephony gateway (which could be implemented on a PC that has a soft phone Voip client, or in hardware), and simply use it. From here it wouldn't be hard to create a triple-connectivity phone, which can use Bluetooth via a gateway, WiFi, or a cellular network depending on your surroundings and available resources.

All of the technology is there to do the sorts of things you want -- at this point, I think we just need to wait for Voip to become even more entrenched in the market, in order to get more products on the market and prices down.
